October Opportunity: CROP Walk

Please join us in supporting the Raleigh CROP Hunger Walk. CUCC has a team walking. There are two ways you can get involved (1) Join the team, or (2) donate. You can do either of these via our team website: http://hunger.cwsglobal.org/goto/cucc_cropwalk2014 . The walk will take place on Sunday October 26. The walk begins at 3 pm. 5k or 1 mile short options available. We begin and end at Marbles Kids Museum, 201 E Hargett St. Registration starts at 2pm. It is a family friendly event and includes a costume contest for the kids. For further information or for paper registration, please contact Maria Mayorga. "CROP Hunger Walks help to support the overall ministry of Church World Service, especially grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts around the world. CROP Hunger Walks help to provide food and water, as well as reso

October Sunday Forums to focus on economic justice

Join the discussion as we learn from experts in the field and consider how we might respond. Sunday, October 5 : Children at the Border.   More than 66,000 unaccompanied children have crossed the border.  In the last year more than 47,000 children have crossed.  More than 1,400 of those children have recently been relocated to North Carolina.  We have 170 of the children in Wake County.  There are many legal and moral issues involved.  Ann Robertson and Hans Linnartz will join us at Forum to discuss this child immigrant crisis.    Ann is an immigration lawyer with the Robertson Immigration Law Firm in Raleigh.  The firm represents individuals and companies in all aspects of immigration law, including employment-based and family-based immigration, naturalization, citizenship, asylum and non-immigrant visas.  Hans is a Raleigh immigration lawyer whose practice emphasizes deportation defense, immigration consequences of criminal cases and appeals of denied immigration ben

Climate Change Vigil held at CUCC

On September 21, 2014, a national climate change rally was held in New York. In support of that rally, the Triangle Interfaith Alliance held a supportive vigil at Community UCC to coincide with the New York demonstration of support for national action on climate change. Representatives from a wide spectrum of Triangle religious groups participated in the vigil, which was led by CUCC Pastor Steve Halsted. The vigil lasted for approximately an hour. The video included here is a 10-minute condensation that shows the breadth and scope of the vigil. In order to make the vigil as "public" as possible, the vigil was held on the corner of Wade Avenue and Dixie Trail on the lawn in front of the church. Thus there is considerable traffic noise in the background. (Filmed by Lavon Page and Karen Withem.) This video is permanently archived in the CUCC Archive.

Neighbors In Need Offering - October 5

Community UCC has traditionally supported one church-wide mission offering in the spring and another one in the fall. The fall offering, Neighbors in Need (NIN), will be collected October 5.  Neighbors in Need is a UCC mission offering that targets needs near to home by supporting ministries of justice and compassion in the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry(CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries(JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. And here are just a three examples of grant recipients: Mano en Mano  is the “go-to” agency in Downeast Maine for Latino/Latina, immigrant, and
