CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
The regular fall CUCC congregational meeting will be held after church in the Vaughan Wing on Sunday, November 10th. Presented at the meeting will be a draft budget for the coming year, a draft slate of officers, and a Council update including status of exploration of possible property expansion.

Method Child Development Center
Method Child Development Center was started by Community United Church of Christ of Raleigh and four other churches in Raleigh.  It was the city's first integrated daycare.  It is a nonprofit daycare that offers financial assistance to families based on need and is an organization that could use some community support.  The center hasn't been painted since it moved from Pullen Baptist church to its current location at 900 Trailwood Drive, off Avent Ferry Road, more than seven years ago. We're having a painting work day at 9:00am, Nov. 9, and are looking for volunteers willing to come out and paint for 3 hours or so. If you can help out, please email Andrea Weigl at aweigl@earthlink.net so the parents’ group can make sure it has enough painting supplies for all the volunteers.

Adult Forum - Sunday, November 10, 9:15am, VFH
The Sunday Forum for November deals with the broad subject of the American environment.  This week’s topic is the National Parks.  As many know, the first National Park in the world was Yellowstone located in northwestern Wyoming and established in 1876.  The National Parks are often called “America’s Best Invention” and for good reason.  Our speaker on Sunday will be Dr. Anne Mitchell Whisnant an administrator and adjunct faculty member of History and American Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill.  Dr. Whisnant published the first serious historical study of the Blue Ridge Parkway as well as book-length studies of De Soto National Memorial in Florida and our own Cape Lookout National Seashore.    Dr. Whisnant recently chaired a task force commissioned by the Organization of American Historians and the National Park Service to study the state of historical practice in the National Park Service.  The resulting report entitled Imperiled Promise: the State of History in the National Park Service spells out the need for expanded interest and emphasis on history within the NPS.  Professor Whisnant also serves as scholarly advisor for “Driving Through Time: The Digital Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina,” a digital history collection developed in collaboration with the UNC Libraries.  I urge all members of CUCC who have an interest in the National Parks to attend the Forum on Sunday.

Stewardship Sunday
You should have received your pledge card for 2014.  (If not, there are extras on the table in the back of the Sanctuary). Please fill one out and return it to the CUCC office or simply put it in the offering plate during worship this Sunday.  We will dedicate our pledges and gifts during the 10:30am worship service this Sunday, November 10.

Master Harp Guitarist
Have you ever heard a Harp Guitar?  You’ll have the rare opportunity to do so during our 10:30am Worship on Nov. 10th.  Andrew Kasab, one of the few masters of the harp guitar, will be playing a musical meditation and sharing some information about this instrument.  Andrew combines unconventional approaches to the harp guitar, including alternate tunings and percussive picking and fingering techniques, as well as an eclectic mix of American Primitive guitar, contemporary acoustic, folk, classical, blues and world music. Come enjoy this unique musical experience.

Read Now, Discuss Later: Talking with people on the other side
Do you ever find yourself talking with someone whose viewpoint is different from and hostile to yours?  I do.  I want to be clear about what I believe about the issue while also being loving and building the relationship. Justice and love.  Love and justice.  I’m just not very good at this.  If this sounds like your struggle, too, let’s discuss Justin Lee’s book Torn:  Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs-Christians Debate .  What do his suggestions - geared to the Christian disagreement on welcoming LGBT people - say to us on all kinds of issues of faith in the public square?  Read the whole book before we meet November 10, 6:30-8pm, Bradow Room.  RSVP to Jane Smith or the Church Office (919-787-6422) or cucc@nc.rr.com as soon as possible.

Retirees’ Fellowship
Bring a sandwich and join us for lunch!  Sarah Goddin from Quail Ridge Books will be our guest speaker at the November gathering on Monday, November 11, 10:30am.  Quail Ridge Books has changed ownership, but Sarah Goddin has continued as General Manager.  She is both knowledgeable and personable.  Everyone is invited to attend.  Bring a bag lunch.  Dessert and drinks will be provided. In December, the group will again be sponsoring an ingathering of gifts for Meals on Wheels Clients.  The list of requests follows…

Life and Faith in Downtown Raleigh
Life & Faith in Downtown Raleigh will meet on Tuesday, November 12.  New people are welcomed enthusiastically.  Those who come set the topic for the night as we ponder how to connect what we believe to what we do - 6:30pm for those who want dinner; 7:00pm for beverage-only people.  Dutch treat. Look for our red Life & Faith comma at the corner round table at Tyler’s Tap Room. For more information, contact Jane Smith.

Foreign Film Movie Night, Friday, November 15
The Foreign Film series resumes on Friday night, November 15 with a 7 PM showing of Dean Spanley in the Fellowship Hall. Peter O'Toole, Sam Neill, and Jeremy Northam star in this film from 2008, an Australian production filmed in New Zealand. See the News & Chat blog for details. (Sponsored by Monday Lunch Group.)

Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service
The Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service for Community United Church of Christ, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairmont United Methodist Church, Pullen Memorial Baptist Church and West Raleigh Presbyterian Church will be held Sunday, November 24, 7:00pm, at Fairmont United Methodist Church, 2501 Clark Ave Raleigh, NC 27607.  A reception with light refreshments will follow the service to provide a time for fellowship with our various congregations. If you have family members visiting, please bring them with you.  Non-perishable food items will be collected for the needy families in the community.

SNAPcut Challenge – (submitted by Bill Lamb)
I follow Linda Watson, a speaker and author I was introduced to through the CUCC Forum. Linda is a cook who specializes in low-cost, vegetarian meals. She recently sent a message about a SNAPcut Challenge I think some of us at CUCC might want to take. SNAP benefits (the new acronym for Foodstamps) are being cut by congressional action on November 1st.  The challenge is to eat for one week on the current maximum SNAP benefit and the next week on the cut amount prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. For more information about the SNAPcut Challenge or Linda Watson, go to SNAPcut Challenge. (Submitted by Bill Lamb)

Menu of Compassionate Gifts
Is there someone you plan to give a gift to that doesn't really need yet another gift – a family member, neighbor, friend or coworker?  How about choosing from our Menu of Compassionate Gifts?  Six local charitable organizations have been selected and our menu tells you what your donation might do.  One example is: $25 provides 3 nights of shelter, meals and support services for a woman at the Helen Wright Center.  The menu and order form are located on the table in the back of the sanctuary and also online.  You will receive cards to give to the recipients of your gifts. So give it some thought; then give gifts that give twice.

Costume Poetry Slam with Cafe Style Coffee and Dessert
November 16, 7:00pm, in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. (This is our NovemberFest celebration):  Select a favorite poem or literary piece or song lyrics to read (or better yet write something of your own!). It should be short, lasting 1-2 minutes. Then wear something that relates to or enhances the reading. Coffee and dessert will be served cafe style by our youth wait staff. We'll give mock prizes and have some fun with this new idea!

Thanksgiving with CUCC Friends
So where are you going to be on Thanksgiving Day?  Want to spend a little time with CUCC friends and enjoy a good meal?  We would like to start up an old CUCC tradition we haven't done in a while and have a Thanksgiving Day meal at church.  For those who can't spend time with family, why not come together at CUCC and enjoy the season with others in your church?  If you want to participate, please contact the church office at 919-787-6422 or cucc@nc.rr.com.  We'll figure out the logistics when we get an idea of who might be interested.  The Lambs will provide the turkey; pot luck for the rest.

CUCC Christmas Dinner
Christmas will be here soon and the annual CUCC Christmas dinner is just around the corner.  Plans are now being made for this celebration which will include a social hour, a catered meal from Mitch’s Tavern, and holiday entertainment. The Christmas celebration will be held on Saturday, December 14th.  Social hour begins at 6:30pm, with dinner at 7:15pm.  The cost for the meal is $8.00 per person.   Please sign up for this event by Monday, December 2nd, through the church office (919)787-6422.  Let us know if you need child care.
