  • Important announcement concerning municipal elections from Barbara Smalley-McMahan

On October 6th  Raleigh voters will be asked to turnout at the polls to elect a mayor and eight city council members who will be charged with serving the public’s interests for the next two years.  In order to learn more about the crucial role that the issue of affordable housing is playing in this year’s municipal elections, the Raleigh-Apex NAACP has invited Samuel Gunter, the Director of Policy and Advocacy at the North Carolina Housing Coalition to be their guest speaker at this month’s local meeting.  The date is Sunday, August 23, at 4:00 p.m. in the Johnson Building, which is on the State St. side of Martin St. Baptist Church, located at 1001 Martin Street.

The topics that will be covered include (1) the current draft of the Affordable Housing Plan and Affordable Housing Location Policy, (2) Raleigh's 2030 Comprehensive Plan, (3) the Wake County Transit Plan, and (4) how Raleigh fits into the larger, national affordable housing picture.  Whether you’re a member of the NAACP or not, all are welcomed at this event.  If you have questions or would like to learn how you and/or your group might  collaborate with the Raleigh-Apex NAACP to help “Get Out the Vote!” for the 2015 municipal elections, please contact Barbara Smalley-McMahan, at blsmcmahan@nc.rr.com.

  • Book Study Events - Urban Alchemy: Restoring Joy in America's Sorted-Out Cities
Hi Friends in the Anti-racism Fight,

SpiritHouse Inc. has organized another round of the Durham City-wide Book Study, to follow Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow. Over the next few months, groups across the city will be gathering to explore Dr. Mindy Fullilove's Urban Alchemy: Restoring Joy in America's Sorted-Out Cities that discusses systemic racism, gentrification, and divided communities. The Facebook event page for the reading is here.

dismantling Racism works (dRworks) and OAR-Durham's white antiracist caucus will be co-facilitating discussion groups on this book in Aug.-Oct. Sharing the perspective of activated white folks engaging in the work to examine and dismantle racism in all its forms in American society, we are applying this common lens to the lessons that Dr. Fullilove offers in her book. dRworks has described the book as providing a close look at 'the traumatic stress created when communities are broken up or demolished by gentrification in the name of 'urban renewal', and at collaborative strategies to restore and renew cities in alignment with principles of social and racial justice'. Definitely a fitting book for us to cover given the recent developments and gentrification issues in Durham.

There are two choices for times and locations for this book study:

Sunday Group (meeting at 204 Rigsbee Ave. in downtown Durham):
Sunday, August 30th from 2 - 4pm
Sunday, September 20th from 2 - 4pm
Sunday, October 4th from 2 - 4pm

Monday Group (meeting at 2419 Highland Ave. in the Northgate Park neighborhood):
Monday, August 31st from 6:30 - 8:30pm
Monday, September 14th from 6:30 - 8:30pm
Monday, September 28th from 6:30 - 8:30pm
Tentative - Monday, October 5th from 6:30 - 8:30pm

Please RSVP about your attendance, so that the facilitators can prepare accordingly. Use this Google Drive form to let us know which sessions you'd like to attend. The two groups will be lead by separate pairs of facilitators (see bios below) and may be moving along/highlighting different points from the book. So, it is advisable to stay with the same group for the length of the sessions, but certainly not required!

There are copies of the book available at the Durham Public Library and the Regulator Bookshop. There is a waiting list for the book at the library, so be sure to reserve your copy soon. The Library has said that it will order more copies of it, if the demand is strong enough. Let's make it so :)

Finally, the organizers at SpiritHouse have sent out this relevant interview from NPR that talks about "explicit, racially purposeful policy that was pursued at all levels of government, and that's the reason we have these ghettos today and we are reaping the fruits of those policies." This 'sorting out' of our cities that we see today didn't just occur on its own. Join us to discover what was involved and how WE can be involved in creating better, healthier, more holistic ones.

Hope to see you there,
OAR-Durham White Caucus Coordinators

Facilitator Bios:
Facilitators for these two book studies are Jenn Frye, Kimber Heinz, Gann Herman, Rachel Berthiaume. We are a group of white activists in Durham looking to connect, build, and act with other white people locally and in solidarity with the work of local Black-led organizations and organizers committed to a social justice vision that recognizes the intersections between forms of oppression and the ongoing struggle for liberation. We understand that our liberation is inextricably bound to Black liberation. To that end, we are committed to educating ourselves and building relationships that support our ability to act in authentic solidarity around issues impacting Durham.

We bring a range of experience working in social movements as anti-racist white people. We will use our growing skills and knowledge to organize with and invite other white people to raise our collective consciousness and join the call for anti-racist action. We know we will make mistakes, which we will learn from, and we will keep going. We hope you'll be part of our journey as we engage with Urban Alchemy.

Peace,
Al.
