Life and Faith in Raleigh: What scripture is under your skin?

New theme for L&F 2019 Send Jane Smith a verse or story from the Bible that is speaking to your life right now and, sometime this year, we'll chew it over together at Life & Faith, CUCC's drop in conversation over libations at a pub somewhere in Raleigh.  We're looking for scripture that is challenging, inspiring, annoying, reassuring - most of all, trying to tell you (and us) something about your/our life but you aren't exactly sure what.  You don't need to be able to quote the verse exactly or know where to find the story - Jane will look that up for you if you aren't sure. The next Life & Faith will be Tuesday, February 12, pub TBA in this space as we get closer to the event.  Those who want dinner arrive at 6:30PM; conversation begins at 7:00 and runs until 8:00.  Dutch treat and we try to tip generously.  Bring a friend.  Come once or often.  Questions?  Contact Jane Smith smithjeg@mindspring.com

Pastor's Letter

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven, a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.…" Ecclesiastes 3:1-8    This week, Sage turned six-years-old. The morning of his birthday, I took a  cupcake lit with firetruck red candles upstairs and entered his room gently singing "Happy Birthday to you..." His little eyes struggled to open, but at the sight of the flames, he r...

Hello! My name is . . .

Choose your name tag style: pin, clip or necklace CUCC will soon have a permanent name tag holder where members can store their pin, clip or necklace name tags from week to week.  What’s more welcoming than helping visitors know you’re a member of CUCC and can answer questions about the service, our ministries or where to find the restroom?  Also, new members will be able put faces and names together. (Not to mention those of us who’ve been hanging around a couple of years relying on, gulp, memory!) To request a name tag, please sign up in the narthex. As soon as the holder is ready, your name tag will appear. If you have questions, please contact Susan Atkinson (706-295-4574) or Merrilee Jacobson (919-274-4539).

Can I compost this?

Our bigger compost bin CUCC is so enthusiastic about composting that we've had to order a larger bin! Be careful about plastic bags, though.  If you bring your compost from home in a plastic bag, empty the bag into the compost bin and throw the plastic bag into the landfill bin.  If you buy compostable plastic bags, those can go into the compost bin. Compostable plastic bags have the word "compostable" on their packaging. Grocery store produce and bagging bags are NOT compostable. If you have questions about what can be composted, talk to any member of the Justice in a Changing Climate Task Force or contact Jane Smith  smithjeg@mindspring.com.

Pastor's Letter

The Waters of Life By Talitha Arnold, reprinted from ucc.org "When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them." - Isaiah 41:17 For twenty years, the New Mexico congregation I serve has organized "immersion trips" to the Arizona/Sonora border. Our goal is to immerse youth and adults in the issues of the borderlands and to learn about the people who live there. The groups attend immigration hearings and witness parents in shackles being sentenced to deportation. They visit the Wall (it's already up) and meet with Rev. Randy Mayer of El Buen Pastor UCC, who's been involved in immigration issues for decades, and also meet with Border Patrol agents to hear their stories. They visit the Sonoran Desert Museum to explore a landscape that stretches across all our human-made borders. And they experience that desert. With Lo...
