Food Bags Due This Sunday
Effective Monday, 165,000 North Carolinians will lose their extended unemployment benefits. This will probably mean a huge increase in demand for emergency food. I would love to see more food bags on first Sundays, as our current regular donations amount to @ 17 bags. If you can increase your donation, or begin making such a donation, I am sure Urban Ministries would be thrilled, as would many hungry clients. This is the list for food bag items:

  • 1 lb. grits
  • 1 lb. rice
  • 1 lb. dried beans
  • 2 cans beans (no green beans)
  • 1 can carrots
  • 2 cans tomatoes
  • 2 cans (or jars) applesauce
  • 2 1qt. pkgs. dry milk
  • 2 boxes Macaroni/Cheese
  • 1 jar peanut butter

Thanks, Linda Baker

GREAT FLYING SEEDS!! - Hey! Look up in the air!!! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a CUCC P2E seed! You guessed it - P2E time is here again. If it’s anything like last year’s water melon seed spitting contest, it will be a blast. This year’s contest is SUNDAY!!! It will start at Noon and will be held in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. The categories are: Preschool through Kindergarten; First-Graders through Twelve-years-old; and Teenagers through Adults. Teenagers and adults will be divided into their respective gender categories. The winners from each group will be presented a certificate. Everyone is welcome to participate; sign up will take place today. So, practice your breathing and get your puckers ready and let’s make those seeds fly.

Art Wall - To commemorate July 4th, and our many "fallen", Linda Baker has hung her quilt, "Oh My Stars", on the Art Wall. Take a moment to admire the quilt and reflect on the many lives sacrificed for our independence.

The Caring Committee will meet next Sunday in the library after fellowship.

Hospitality for Moral Monday - People from all over North Carolina are coming to Raleigh to take part in Moral Monday. If you are willing to have an out-of-towner stay at your home, email Gray Woodard with bed availability at gray.woodard@yahoo.com.

Keeping Homeless Families Together - Please continue to help families be able to live together as they transition from homelessness to temporary housing to permanent housing by contributing household items. Take a post-it or two from the bright poster in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall, purchase the item(s) written on the post-it(s) and then return the item(s) to the basket under the poster.

Musical - Into the Woods, Jr. - The musical Into the Woods, Jr. will be presented on July 26th and 27th at 7:00pm in the CUCC Sanctuary. Several members of the congregation will be participating in the production. Tickets are free. Donations are accepted.

Retreat, contemplate, share, recreate. All Congregation Retreat, September 10 – 12, 2013
Do you want to enjoy the North Carolina mountains as summer ends and fall begins? Do you want to get to know better others you meet at Community United Church of Christ activities? Do you want to relax, look into the distance and center yourself in preparation for what’s next for you or the congregation? For any or all of these reasons, come to a two day congregational retreat at the UCC Blowing Rock Conference Center (BRCC, formerly Blowing Rock Assembly Grounds or BRAG), where we can get to know each other better and talk about our lives and ministries. We will leave Raleigh on Tuesday, September 10, plan to be at BRCC the nights of September 10 and 11, and return to Raleigh September 12 mid-day. More details about planned activities or periods of free time will be made available later in the summer. Retreat leadership: Steve Halsted, Ursula Schmitt-Pridik (returning for a visit 20 years after she helped lead a similar retreat at Blowing Rock in 1993), Marty Lamb, Edith Sylla, and others. There will be a variety of activities offered for larger or smaller groups including participating in organized creative or spiritual activity, hiking the massive grounds at Moses Cone House, exploring the town of Blowing Rock, sitting in rocking chairs on the porch, chatting, singing, breathing, and napping. If you would like to help plan the retreat, please so indicate on the form below. Shared transportation will be arranged when we know who is coming.

Those organizing the retreat want to reserve rooms in the Corriher Lodge at BRCC (More information at http://www.brccenter.org/), for which BRCC wants a deposit of $50/person. If you think you are interested in attending, please fill out the form below and mail it to the church or put it in the offering plate along with your check by Sunday, July 14 (alternately send an email expressing your interest in more information to Cathy in the church office (cucc@nc.rr.com) with a copy to Edith Sylla (edsylla@gmail.com) and we will get back to you for details). Deposit checks for $50/person should be made out to CUCC with “September retreat” in the memo field (refunds possible if your plans change up to the end of August). For room costs, see below. Meals at BRCC cost: breakfast $8.75; lunch $9.75; and dinner $11.25. They request a minimum of 20 people for any meal we want them to serve. We will likely ask for dinner on September 10 and 11, breakfast on September 11 and 12; and lunch on September 11, but we can change our request up through August 27.
