Cathy Cralle Jones is a gym buddy who is also a member of our sister congregation, St. Paul's Christian Church (our Maundy Thursday worship partners). She mentioned that they are scurrying to fill all the slots for this annual ministry at the state fair and wondered if I would mind passing along the invitation to folks at CUCC. St Paul's has been providing good food and a place of rest and fellowship at the North Carolina State Fair for almost 50 years. In its earliest days as a new congregation in Raleigh, the ladies of the church focused on providing the best ham biscuits around. Through the years, the menu and the setting have expanded so that the Restaurant is a permanent space across from Dorton Arena and our menu is Country Fare, providing one of the few places at the fair to have home cooked style vegetables with your meal, and a place to sit a spell, in the midst of all the fried food and frenzy. It also is an excellent place to visit with and begin relationship with folks who may not have a church home.
Proceeds from the Fair support the ministries of St. Paul's Christian Church and other participating congregations. Last year, proceeds were used in part to support St. Paul's first global mission trip to Guatemala. Volunteers come from a number of congregations in the area (including Wake Forest Christian Church, and New Life International Christian Church) and our Scout Troop 353.
We make it as easy as possible on volunteers. We provide shuttle service from St. Paul's to the Fairgrounds and back (except 1st shift when parking is easier and you don't have to fight the crowds), free entrance to the Fair, and a free meal for every volunteer. Additionally, volunteers have the opportunity to work closely with others and share the exciting and fun spirit of shared ministry and service. Jobs range from door greeters and table cleaners, to grill masters and biscuit bakers. If standing for long periods is a challenge, you might enjoy taking orders, serving drinks, or just generally assisting in the dining room.
There are 3 shifts: Breakfast (6:30 - 12:00); Lunch (11:30 - 5:30); Dinner (5:00 - 10:00). Plan to come early or stay late if you would like to have a meal. If you can work the Dinner shift, but can't make it until after 5:00, just write a note to let the shift manager know that you are coming in a little late. If you would like to use the shuttle service, please be sure to indicate that on the sign-up so we can have enough transportation available. To sign up for a shift or to learn more about the different opportunities to serve as a volunteer. State Fair entry tickets will be available for pick up at the church.
If you would prefer to avoid the crowd at the Fair, there are other opportunities to help with set up and take down. This option gives you the unique opportunity to see the Fair from the inside out. Helpers are particularly needed, this Saturday and through the week to help with set up, and then finally on Monday October 27th at the end of the fair. To sign up to help with this part of the Fair.
