Last Saturday I had the honor and privilege of officiating at the wedding of two young women who were members of my church back in Lafayette, Indiana. After 22 years together, they are finally married. I choked back tears more than once.
On Tuesday, April 28, at 10:30am, I will experience another honor. I have been invited to bring the opening prayer as we remember the construction workers who were killed in downtown Raleigh on March 23. This service will remember these workers and other workers who have lost their lives in the past year. It is part of the Workers Memorial Week. We will gather at the site where the March accident occurred. I will share more information with you as I have it.
Perhaps you will join me as we honor and remember the lives lost. Let us stand in solidarity with those who build our buildings and keep them maintained. Let us stand beside the families who have lost their loved ones. Let us join together as brothers and sisters who love each other.
I truly am honored to have been asked, and I suspect I will, once again, be choking back some tears.

Umstead Park: Camp CRABTREE (Unit A)
Directions:
William B. Umstead State Park is located in Wake County between Raleigh and Durham: 8801 Glenwood Ave. (park entrance is 2.9 miles north of intersection of Glenwood and Millbrook on the left side of the highway as you’re headed west.)
We will be at Camp Crabtree Unit A: After turning left into the park entrance, continue past the Visitor’s Center.
Turn left on Maintenance Road (about .6 miles from entrance, signage also indicates toward Group Camps)
Take your first right on Group Camp Road. This is a dirt and gravel road. Continue for 1.5 miles. You will pass a bridge, and lake access parking.
Camp Crabtree entrance is on the left as you reach the top of the hill.
Continue .3 miles to camp. Pull all the way to the dining hall to unload and then park in the lot.
The park gates close at 8PM, and no one is permitted in or out after that time. Please join us until 7:30PM, and then make your way out, or count on spending the night!
If you are coming for the evening only, please bring:
a side dish to share with dinner
a camp chair
a copy of Rise Up Singing ! If you have one!
If you are spending the night, please bring:
a side dish to share with dinner
a camp chair
socks & comfortable shoes for walking/playing
clothes in layers (it may get cool at night)
a sleeping bag
pillow
a flashlight
toiletries (there are showers)

The Caring Committee wants to encourage everyone to contact us when you have need of care, help, or support. The committee is available to help provide food, do some house and ground work, visit those who are sick, drive you to doctor’s appointments, etc. And of course, we are always available to pray for you, with you, and for our church community. A list of Caring Committee members is on our church website. Do you enjoy the fellowship with your church family after worship service? If so, we could use your help in providing this fellowship. It’s very simple – the cheese, crackers, nuts and drinks are already available in the kitchen. We ask that you provide an item (you can be reimbursed if you wish) to go along with the above items, such as fruit or a vegetable platter, dip and chips, etc. You would be responsible for setting up and cleaning up afterwards. Social Justice Ministry Survey
This Sunday, April 26, during the 10:30am worship service, is your second chance to let the Social Justice Ministry know what groups or topics you are interested or active in related to social justice. If you turned in a slip of paper last week, you can do it again if you have thought of new things. If you miss turning in your interests in church, you may send an email to the church (office.cucc@gmail.com) indicating what you do or what you would like SJM to advocate for. John and Adrienne Little have volunteered to make a display in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall with the results.

Final call for books for the combined CUCC/UUFR Book Sale. We are grateful for the mountain of books that already have come in and look forward to many more donations. Books are due by Monday, April 27. And don’t forget to come to this fabulous book sale which will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Wade Avenue. Dates and times for the sale are:

Taizé Worship at Duke, April 24
Three brothers from the Taizé community in France will be at Duke University for worship and conversation on Friday, April 24.
Location: Goodson Chapel in the Divinity School
Schedule: 7:00pm evening prayer service; 8:00pm conversation with the brothers.
Recommended parking is in the Bryan Center lot off Scientific Dr.
Church Women United
Church Women United will celebrate May Friendship Day in the CUCC Sanctuary at 10:00am on Friday, May 1. Our program this year is on the “Journey of the Caregiver,” followed by a light lunch. CUCC women are invited to attend by contacting Joan Robertson at 919-508-7086 or jrobertson1901@yahoo.com.

Wake Federation of the Blind Yard Sale
China, baskets, fans and pans –oh my!!! It must be time for the 2015 Wake Federation of the Blind Yard Sale. The yard sale will take place in the CUCC Vaughan Fellowship Hall on Saturday, May 16th, from 8:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Proceeds from the sale will help blind and visually impaired persons gain better equality and independence in our society. If you would like to make donations for the Wake Federation yard sale, please free to drop them off in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall as early as 1:00 P.M. on Friday the 15th. Unsold items will be given to Slightly Used, a thrift store where blind and visually impaired persons are employed. Thank you for your participation in previous yard sales for the Wake Federation of the Blind; and thank you again for supporting us with this one! See you Saturday, May 16th.
Durham Bulls Baseball!
Flowers are blooming! The birds are returning and the weather has gotten warmer! That means it’s time for CUCC to take in a Durham Bulls baseball game. This year’s game will take place on Friday, May 29th at 7:05pm. The Bulls, a AAA minor league team of the Tampa Bay Rays, will be playing the Syracuse Sky Chiefs. Tickets for adults and children 3 and up are $9.66 including tax. Good seats are still available, but we want to reserve them as soon as possible; so contact the church office at 919-809-8850 and let Cathy know how many tickets you wish to purchase. Then send in your money to the church office or drop it in the offering plate before May 11th. This is always great fun and a wonderful way to fellowship with church members in a different environment and enjoy a great ball game at the same time. Carpooling from the church will be available if you don’t want to drive to Durham. Tickets will be booked from section 211 on the third base side. Come and let us have a ball with the Bulls! Mac Hulslander is CUCC’s Delegate to General Synod
Mac Hulslander will be the delegate for the 2015 General Synod, June 26-30, in Cleveland, Ohio. There are 16 resolutions that will be discussed at the Synod. Please go to http://synod.uccpages.org/resolutions/index.html to read about the resolutions; then let Mac know if you would like him to comment on your behalf at the Synod concerning any of these matters. Out!Raleigh
On May 2nd, 2015, Fayetteville Street in Downtown Raleigh transforms into the biggest Out! Raleigh festival ever! The 5th annual Out!Raleigh - "A Better Tomorrow, Today!" -will include entertainment, vendors, food trucks, and the biggest KidsZone to date.
Out! Raleigh is a fun, family-friendly event and for the fifth year in a row, the Open and Affirming Task Force (ONA) will have a presence there. Out!Raleigh has become an integral part of Raleigh’s culture, promoting diversity awareness as well as a sense of inclusiveness for the LGBT community and its allies. Each year has been more successful than the last, and this year will be no exception. Last year, more than 25,000 people poured into City Plaza to celebrate the LGBT community, their friends and their families. Come and join the festivities from 11:00am to 6:00pm. And make sure you stop by the ONA Task Force’s table and say hello. If you are interested in helping us out at the festival, contact Joan McAllister at 919-851-9674. Hope to see you at Out!Raleigh.
