This Sunday: Training to help with sanctuary at UPUCC

Our new friend, Eliseo (right)
with UPUCC pastor, Doug Long
If you are considering volunteering to host or help with one of the tasks needed to help someone living in sanctuary, attend the volunteer training at Umstead Park United Church of Christ.
Training:  Sunday, January 21, noon
Directions to UPUCC
No advance registration required.

See the list of volunteer opportunities.

Sign up to volunteer.   Host volunteers must attend training and have a background check.  Other volunteer opportunities do not require training, but you may find it useful.

Umstead Park UCC is providing sanctuary to Eliseo Jimenez whose wife and two children do not live at the church.  More than 100 volunteers/month are needed to help with sanctuary for Eliseo, and 8 congregations (including CUCC) are pitching in to help Umstead Park UCC.  You choose how often and what times you want to work. The following CUCC people are among those who have hosted now and can tell you about their experience:  Diana Koenning, Ann and Joe Retzer, Lena Gallitano, Gary and Jane Smith, Summer Cullen.  In addition to hosting (staying in the building while Eliseo is there), volunteers are needed to shop for Eliseo's groceries, do laundry, provide meals, run errands, or drive his family to Raleigh for visits.

Community UCC does not currently plan to become a sanctuary, in part because we do not have shower facilities.  We are glad to help Umstead Park UCC in this community effort.
