Sunday, July 21: Youth Field Trip! On Sunday, the Youth will take a trip to a Hindu Temple in Morrisville! Please let Śānti know if you can drive, and please be in the Dixie Trail Parking Lot at 10:15! Remember to represent our church well and be gracious guests - shorts are fine but please no short shorts, revealing attire, or sloppy dress. We'll drive to Morrisville together for this unique experience! We will return to the church parking lot at 12:30. Thank you to Katie and Mary's dad, Ravi Srivastava, for leading our church school class on July 14, and for organizing this trip.
Keeping Homeless Families Together - Please continue to help families be able to live together as they transition from homelessness to temporary housing to permanent housing by contributing household items. Take a post-it or two from the bright poster in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall, purchase the item(s) written on the post-it(s) and then return the item(s) to the basket under the poster.
Earth Sabbath - This interfaith evening, sponsored by NCIPL and CUCC, combines time for networking with fellowship and worship drawn from many faith traditions. The evening’s focus is on renewing our spirits for creation care, advocacy, and education. 7:00pm, July 23, Vaughan Fellowship Hall. Friends are welcome.
Tai Chi – Wednesday mornings at 9:30am in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. Looking for a way to reduce stress? Consider Tai Chi. Originally developed for self-defense, Tai Chi has evolved into a graceful form of exercise that's now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions. Often described as meditation in motion, Tai Chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. All are welcome.
Lena Gallitano Receives Audubon Award - At the National Audubon meeting in Stevenson WA, Lena Gallitano won the William Dutcher award for her volunteer service to Audubon. Thank you Lena for all you do to promote awareness of our beautiful and important feathered friends.
Musical - Into the Woods, Jr. - The musical Into the Woods, Jr. will be presented on July 26th and 27th at 7:00pm in the CUCC Sanctuary. Several members of the congregation will be participating in the production. Tickets are free. Donations are accepted.
Guest Consultant at Moral Mondays Group this Sunday -
On Sunday July 21, Cindy Hodges will be joining us to provide information on how we can help register voters and counter the effects of voter-suppressing legislation now being passed by the NC Legislature. The Moral Mondays Sunday ad hoc group has been discussing ways that we can be involved with voter registration, polling place support, and assistance to people who need to get IDs but cannot afford it. All are invited to attend this meeting at 9:15 am to get your questions answered. Cindy is Precinct Captain for Joan’s precinct in West Raleigh. In addition we hope to hear from our newest Moral Monday arrestees, Gray and Bev, about their experiences. We will focus on next steps. – submitted by Joan McAllister for the Moral Monday ad hoc group.
Retreat, contemplate, share, recreate. All Congregation Retreat, September 10–12, 2013 - Do you want to enjoy the North Carolina Mountains as summer ends and fall begins? Do you want to get to know better others you meet at Community United Church of Christ activities? Do you want to relax, look into the distance and center yourself in preparation for what’s next for you or the congregation? For any or all of these reasons, come to a two day congregational retreat at the UCC Blowing Rock Conference Center (BRCC, formerly Blowing Rock Assembly Grounds or BRAG), where we can get to know each other better and talk about our lives and ministries. We will leave Raleigh on Tuesday, September 10, plan to be at BRCC the nights of September 10 and 11, and return to Raleigh September 12 mid-day. Retreat leadership: Steve Halsted, Ursula Schmitt-Pridik. If you are interested, pick up a green form on the back table of the church sanctuary (or fill in the one below) and turn in your form and deposit to the Church Office, Carol Clark, or Marty Lamb. Deposit checks for $50/person should be made out to CUCC with “September retreat” in the memo field (refunds possible up to mid-August if your plans change).
