Please join us at 4:00pm Sunday on the front lawn of CUCC for an interfaith vigil in support of the People’s Climate March. Sponsored by: Triangle Interfaith Alliance, Community United Church of Christ, North Carolina Interfaith Power and Light, Audubon Society of North Carolina, 350.org Triangle Chapter, Triangle Native American Society, Muslims for Social Justice, the Methodist Federation for Social Action – North Carolina Conference, and North Carolina Conservation Network.
Forum – Sunday, September 21, 9:15am
The CUCC Forum for September will be led by The ONA Task Force. Forum meets from 9:15am - 10:15am, in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.
September 21: Jonah Pierce, Charge Nurse at UNC’s Infectious Diseases Clinic, will be giving us stories from the personal side of HIV/AIDS: How long are people surviving? Are people getting the medications they need? What about those who are sick and who are not getting the support of family or friends? How might volunteers from CUCC assist with the needs of these patients?
September 28: Dr. Charles van der Horst, physician for HIV/AIDS patients at UNC’s Infectious Diseases Clinic, and strong advocate for Medicaid expansion, will be joining us to talk about the impact on patients resulting from the continued erosion of medical benefits for his patients. Dr. van der Horst has been an iconic figure at Moral Monday events and is a passionate advocate for health care.
30-Day Vegan Pledge
The Vegan Pledge is a four-week program designed to provide all the necessary education and resources to those who are ready to give veganism a try for thirty days! We’ll support you with a free care package, a knowledgeable vegan mentor, cooking demos, and weekly meetings over 5 consecutive Saturdays on the topics of ethics, health, environmentalism, and daily living issues. This will be our fourth iteration, and we’ve had great success with our previous Pledges. Many past pledge participants have remained vegan for years now and have also remained friends with those they met during the program. PAN (Peace Advocacy Network) works hard to ensure participants have resources available to them long after the pledge is over! “Voting Rights for All”
The Methodist Federation for Social Action will host a conference called “Voting Rights for All,” on Saturday, September 20th, from 9:00am - 3:30pm, at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, 504 West Chapel Hill Street, Durham NC. The purpose is to discuss the voter suppression laws passed by the General Assembly and make people aware of what their rights are as voters.
Workshops will include: How to get a voter ID; what is the current law and legislative redistricting? The keynote address will be delivered by former NC Senator Ellie Kinnaird. Registration is $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event - $10 for students. There will be a light breakfast and boxed lunches. Every Tuesday, from 12:30pm to 1:00pm, Duane Beck from the Mennonite Church meets with some of us. Go in the front door off of Jones Street. Turn left and meet at a table in the garden area. Scriptures will be provided if requested.

Documentary - "Pictures from a Hiroshima School Yard"
"Pictures from a Hiroshima School Yard" - a documentary film of children's art by Hiroshima survivors. The artists are now in their late 70s. The showing will be at the Rialto Theatre, 1620 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh. The showing will be on Sunday, September 28, 2:00pm. Donations to NC Peace Action will be accepted.
NC Pride Festival and Parade – Saturday, September 27
Come out and show your support for our LGBT family and friends. CUCC will have an outreach table and will march in the parade. If you have never been to Pride, you have missed out on a wonderfully affirming event. We need volunteers to help set up and be at our table; and we especially would love to have as many as are able to march with us! The event is located on the Duke East Campus. Set up begins at 9:00am. Festival grounds open at 10:00am and the Parade begins at 1:00pm. Contact Shaleika Covington-Jones or Joan McAllister for more information.

Neighbors In Need Offering - October 5
Every fall, CUCC has traditionally supported Neighbors in Need (NIN). We will collect for NIN on Sunday, October 5. Neighbors in Need is a UCC mission offering that targets needs near to home by supporting ministries of justice and compassion in the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. Walk to benefit quality care and research for those with mental illness. This walk takes place during worship and is the way our youth will worship and share God's love on this special day every year. PLM Families Together has received a free playground for the families they support! Now, all they need are people to help them install it! The group is asking for volunteers on any of the following three dates - October 27, 28, 29 - for various tasks from building, to signing people in, to helping with children's activities, medical volunteers, and food. Builders must be 14 years or older, but there will be activities available for younger children to participate in on October 29. PLM FT would love to have a strong CUCC presence helping out. Please help families be able to live together as they transition from homelessness to temporary housing to permanent housing by contributing household items. Take a post-it or two from the bright poster in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall, purchase the item(s) written on the post-it(s) and then return the item(s) to the basket under the poster.
Kroger’s Guns-in-Stores Policy
Kroger executives are monitoring customer feedback and waiting to see if there's an impact on their brand before making any changes to their guns-in-stores policy.
If you disagree with Kroger’s policy of allowing customers with guns into their stores, please contact them and let them know! Plain and simple, Kroger needs to hear directly from customers -- that's the only thing that will get them to stop letting customers openly carry guns in their stores.
