January Congregational Meeting – January 25th
Church Council has scheduled the January congregational meeting to be held on January 25, 2015. This meeting is required by the CUCC bylaws. Primary actions at the meeting will include election of officers and committee and ministry members for 2015, passage of a church budget for 2015, and distribution of ministry and committee reports describing activities in 2014.

Joy Alford to Preach this Sunday
Join us this Sunday as we welcome our own Joy Alford to the pulpit.  Joy has recently returned from a mission trip to Cuba.  Welcome home, Joy!

Let’s Go See the Movie “Selma”
Let’s go see the movie Selma: Please join the CUCC Youth Group for the 3:30pm showing of Selma at Regal North Hills Cinema THIS Sunday, January 25! We will not be organizing carpooling. YOUTH, BRING YOUR STUDENT ID OR YOUR REPORT CARD AND YOU WILL GET IN FREE! Parents, please let Santi know if you and/or your youth are coming.

2014 Giving Statements
Your 2014 Giving Statement is in the box on the back table in the sanctuary.  The box will be there Sunday, January 18, and Sunday, January 25.  If you have not taken your statement from the box after January 25, your statement will be mailed to you.  If you have questions about your statement, please contact Carol Clark at 919-876-1393.

Forum, Sunday, January 25 – “Affordable Housing in North Carolina”
Forum will be a panel discussion of the status of the church’s latest initiative in Affordable Housing:  the seven rental unit purchased last May.  The panelists will include   John and Phyllis Kitchen of Horizon Management, the company that manages the apartments and house.  John and Phyllis will tell us about how they screen potential tenants, collect rent, how rents are set, and on-going maintenance issues with rental housing.  CCLIHC Board member and Treasurer, Carol Kepler, and Board member Frank Gailor will explain the church’s investment in the corporation, how the property purchase was financed, the current status of the church members’ contributions and loans that made the purchase possible, the current level of income and expenses, and the potential options for raising the funds necessary to pay off the balance of loans made by church members.  There will be time for questions and discussion.

Loaves and Fishes Chili Sale
Loaves and fishes chili buyers! Please pick-up your chili orders immediately following Sunday’s church service and before the congregational meeting.

Florescent bulbs and batteries - by January 25
If you have unbroken florescent bulbs (curly or long tube) or batteries, hand them to Jane or Gary Smith by January 25.  Jane is planning a trip to the hazardous waste disposal center.  DO NOT put them on the shelf in the Fellowship Hall; let's keep everyone safe!

Welcoming Luncheon for Reverend Peg Nowling Williams
Our new Intentional Interim Pastor begins her work with our church on Monday, February 2, 2015.  She will be joining us for our 10:30am worship service on Sunday, February 1.  After the service, during fellowship time, we will have a chili and salad luncheon welcoming her to our congregation.  We could use your help providing ingredients for the salad or bread/cornbread to go with the chili.  Please contact Susan Maleszweski at 919-469-4785 or Maleszweski@sbcglobal.net if you are able to help.  Thank you!

CSJ Annual Dinner Meeting – Monday, February 2, 2015, 6:00pm
The Congregations for Social Justice will hold its annual dinner meeting on Monday, February 2, 2015, 6:00pm at Highland United Methodist Church.  David Crabtree, Episcopal Deacon and WRAL-TV News Anchor, will be the guest speaker.  The Annual Social Justice Award and Recognition will be announced.  You may nominate someone who has carried the mantle of social justice advocacy for many years; someone who models for you what advocating for justice is all about.  If you would like to attend, please contact Adrienne Little at 919-781-0829.  For additional information go to https://www.facebook.com/CongregationsForSocialJustice.

Housing Request for HKonJ
Our dinner guests for February 13 will mostly be sleeping on the floor at the church on Martin Street the night before the HKonJ march. However, some of them are just not able to do that.  If you would be willing to help house a few of these folks Friday night, please let Joan McAllister know. This would involve:
1.  Picking them up from the church after dinner (around 7)
2.  Housing them for the night
3.  Delivering them to the church on Saturday morning by 8 am. The church will provide breakfast.
The organizers are estimating that about a dozen people will appreciate alternative housing.

Copies of Sermons from Guest Preachers
Have you missed the sermons from our guest preachers?  Thanks to their generosity, the notes from which they preached are on our website.  On the homepage, look for the Hot Topic called Pastoral Transition and Sermons.  You’ll find links to each sermon (as well as Martin Luther King Jr.’s sermon from which Robert recited) toward the end of that post.  Joy included two photos from her trip to Cuba; both are included in her sermon notes.  As you read, please keep in mind that our preachers did not know we would be asking for their preaching notes directly from the pulpit and they did not have the opportunity to polish them into text intended for reading. Here is the link:  http://www.communityucc.org/2014/12/peg-nowling-williams.html

No February Newsletter
There will be no February 2015 Newsletter.  If you have anything you would like to post or share, please send it to the church office and it will be put in the Friday email and/or the Sunday bulletins.  For questions, contact the church office at 919-787-6422.
