If you lived in Indiana today, you would be reading about the 25th anniversary of a high school basketball game where over 41,000 people came to watch a senior in high school play. His name is Damon Bailey and he and his school from Bedford were in Indianapolis to play in Indiana’s state championship*. I was one of those fans.
We Hoosiers came to hear about Damon when he was in the 8th grade and Indiana University coach Bobby Knight started talking about him. In 1990 Damon joined the IU basketball team as a freshman and we loved him even more. That was a fun four years.
In 1994 the NBA draft was in Indianapolis and I was there when Damon was drafted in the 44th round by the Indiana Pacers. The place went wild. However, Damon was a better high school and college player than he was a professional one and didn’t make the team. Today he is the assistant coach of Butler University’s women’s basketball team. We had higher dreams for him, but all is well and we are proud of this local boy “who did good.” What a difference 25 years makes.
What does this story have to do with Palm Sunday?
The palms have been delivered to the church. On Sunday we will gather in the courtyard and enter the sanctuary together waving the palm branches celebrating Palm Sunday – Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.
Palm Sunday is the day that brings us into Holy Week. I love that, for a little while, people waved the branches and celebrated. However, they also waited for Jesus to start throwing candy, and when he didn’t their enthusiasm waned. Things changed drastically. The people lining the streets to watch the parade went home.
In the Gospel of Luke 19:28-44, Jesus rode into Jerusalem, but when he saw the city, he wept for what was yet to come.
What a difference a week made.
Damon played for the largest crowd ever gathered for a high school basketball game. He didn’t become the greatest basketball player of all time, but he went on to be a happy, healthy young man who contributes to our world.
Jesus stepped out in faith to follow God’s bidding. He spent three years with the disciples and the people who were interested in hearing what he had to say. Because he didn’t do all that the people expected him to do, things changed drastically, and history was altered for everyone.
I hope you will join us on Sunday for Palm Sunday, and the other Holy Week events we have planned. It is an opportunity to re-experience the life of Jesus, to be part of the crowd and walk with him on his journey to the cross.
* In those days Indiana didn’t have a class system for the state championships. Little schools played big schools – hence, the movie “Hoosiers” where a small school won the whole thing. True story, except instead of it being Hickory, Indiana, the town was Milan.

Lenten Forum Series – Living the Questions
Living the Questions: Countering Pharaoh's Production - Consumption Society Today. Led by Joy Alford, 9:00am – 10:00am, Vaughan Fellowship Hall, Sundays during Lent. Walter Brueggemann, Old Testament scholar, retired Columbia Theological Seminary professor, and United Church of Christ minister, will be featured each week in 10 -12 minute DVD segments during the series. We hope you will join us for this thought provoking Lenten conversation.
Friday Evening Film Series
Join us for our last film in our Friday Evening Lenten Film Series. Following the film, we will have a brief discussion on the film - 7:00pm, March 27, Vaughan Fellowship Hall.

Maundy Thursday Worship, Thursday, April 2
Each year we join our friends at St. Paul's Christian Church, 3331 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, for a dinner of soup and bread, beginning at 6:30pm, followed by Maundy Thursday worship with communion. Worship begins at 7:00pm, but will be pushed back to 7:15 if people are not finished eating.
Church Wide Work Day, Saturday, March 28, 9:00am - Noon
Saturday, March 28, 9:00am to Noon. Come for an hour or stay the whole time. If you are new to CUCC, this is a great way to meet people as you work side by side cleaning up the outside of the church by removing pine straw, pine cones, etc. from the walkways and paths. We’ll also clean the rain gutters and spruce up the inside of the church. Check with the church office to see what tools you could bring (bring gloves!). There are always family friendly tasks to do. Bring a bag lunch if you would like to stay and have lunch together.

The NC State Catholic Campus Ministry/Raleigh Bread for the World chapter, in cooperation with many other congregations and groups, is excited to announce the 2015 statewide Bread convention to be held at Raleigh's Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC, March 28, 8:30am – 3:30pm. Bread for the World is a Christian advocacy organization with the goal to: "Urge our nation's leaders to end hunger."
Bread for the World says: "We can end hunger in our time ... whether the hungry live in the next house, the next state, or the next continent. Healing Service, Monday, March 30, 12:45pm
The Monday Lunch Group is having a Healing Service in the Sanctuary on Monday, March 30, at 12:45. You are invited to come for healing prayer for yourself or as proxy for someone. The service includes prayers for body, mind and spirit with laying on of hands and anointing with oil. Come! Receive this blessing on Holy Week Monday! (James 5: 13-14)
Parents’ Night Out (Childcare for CUCC Children) and Lock-In For Youth – April 10th
April 10! Youth will provide childcare for CUCC Children ages 3-10 from 6:00pm – 9:00pm, then CUCC Youth will continue with games, a movie, and an overnight lock-in. Parents of children please sign up for childcare by emailing Santi at forsanti@aol.com.
“Let Your Life Speak” Series
Larry Petrovick will offer a program of introspection and sharing based on the book by Parker Palmer, Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation. The program employs the Circle of Trust concept which is an effective method for probing and sharing one's deepest values. Several of us from CUCC took Larry's program last year which used the same method to explore and reflect on the great book A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. The six-week program will take place on Monday nights in April and May. Based on my experience last year, I strongly recommend Larry's offering this year. The cost of the series is $70, but a few scholarships are available for CUCC members. (Submitted by John Little) Below is registration information about the series:

This introductory series will meet for six weeks on Monday evening, April 13 – May 18, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm Monday nights in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall at CUCC. It is an opportunity to reflect on your life, past, present and future. During this series we will use the Circle of Trust approach, developed by Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage & Renewal. The Circle of Trust creates a process of shared exploration that creates a safe space for nurturing our personal and professional integrity and the courage to act on it. We'll start with cake and an announcement of our progress raising funds for the solar project. Choose between walking/running the greenway, enjoying the playground, kicking a ball around the fields, or chatting at the picnic area. Day trips to fun destinations. A geology field trip or a hike at a state park
