Hurricane Harvey from a Texas Native's Perspective

Dear CUCC family and friends, Please read this news from Texas native and  new CUCCer, Mike Cline about details in the greater Houston area post Hurricane Harvey and the many avenues through which we can  respond to disaster relief efforts there: "My friends and family are so far okay. Grace is in San Antonio and luckily San Antonio didn't get much of the storm as they had expected.  My ex-wife, Amy, is in League City which is near Galveston.  As of yesterday evening she was safe and dry. Houston is so spread out that what one person can experience is so much different than the other.  But most are with 1) dry for now but watching as the rain comes down and the water rises hoping that there will be a lull in the storm and just stuck in their house waiting everything out; 2) having to evacuate to higher ground (our Rabbi and his family had to evacuate their home and break into the 2 story unoccupied house next door and then were eventually rescued by a boat crew ...

We invite you again to join us in making this our most successful ad. This year PFLAG members delivered educational packets to Wake/Durham high school GSA advisors and counselors, made presentations to Red Hat, Athens High School, and the UNC LGBTQ...

Urban Ministry Food Bag Donations due Sunday, September 3

Exciting Changes to Urban Ministry Food Bags! Urban Ministries has introduced a “client choice model”.  This means that instead of pre-packaging groceries, they allow clients to pick out their own groceries. This helps clients with meal planning, creates less food waste, and restores dignity to many families in tough situations. How do our basic bags fit into this new system? The basic bag is great! All of the foods that are included in a basic bag are still needed. Once the basic bags arrive, they simply restock the items on the shelves. This means all items on the original list are great, but other items are good too!  See list of items below. We are still collecting food or monetary donations on the first Sunday of each month. Food items to donate : Canned beans (e.g. navy, pinto, kidney ); Canned vegetables (e.g. tomatoes, carrots, green beans); Juice; Healthy Snacks (e.g. applesauce); Staples (e.g. dried rice, grits, dried beans, mac & cheese); Peanut butter; Dried mi...

Battery and Light Bulb Collection - hand to hand

Hand your bulb directly to Jane or Gary The Justice in a Changing Climate Task Force will take your small batteries and florescent light bulbs (curly or long tube) to the hazardous waste disposal site.  Our next run is September 16. Hand your batteries and bulbs to Jane or Gary Smith.   DO NOT leave them at CUCC .  These are hazardous; we don't want anyone to get hurt.

Don't Throw away your eclipse glasses.

Do you still have your eclipse glasses?  CUCC will collect them to send to a project just announced by Astronomers Without Borders.  There will be a purple bag on the bulletin board in the hallway just past the bathrooms where you can put your glasses.  The plan is to send eclipse glasses to schools in South America for their 2019 eclipse!

Animate Faith

Seven Big Conversations about Faith This adult education course imaginatively explores central topics of Christianity. 9:30-10:15AM Sundays, September 17 - October 29, Hoffmann Room This group will be facilitated by Suzette Roach and Julie Robertson. In each of the seven sessions, the group will watch a video featuring a leading contemporary voice from the Christian faith, spend time on personal reflection and journaling, and share ideas with the group. Each video blends live action with animation to introduce a question, provide a thought-provoking perspective, and beckon viewers to participate in the dialogue. The curriculum features perspectives on God, religion, Jesus, salvation, the cross, the Bible, and church from Christian thought leaders. Each session encourages participants to discuss, sketch, doodle, create, and share. A journal will be provided for reflection and prayer.

Seven Steps to becoming a Better Ally

Seven Steps to Becoming a Better Ally Have you ever noticed that, even in our work for social justice, we often end up working alongside people who are largely similar to ourselves? Similar in terms of class, race, education level, culture, religion, etc.? Although we usually agree that diverse coalitions are more just and more effective, getting there can be hard. This series will explore what it means to be an ally--to work in solidarity with others from different backgrounds than ourselves to reach social justice goals. We will explore the internal work of understanding our own biases and privileges, and the external work of finding ally partners and building fair and responsible relationships. Participants will receive a copy of my forthcoming self-published book: The Education of a Novice Ally: Learning to be a Middle Class Ally in the Work to End Poverty. (Reading the book is not required to participate.) My ideas about allyship come from my experience working across class li...

Words of Gratitude from Pastor Jenny

Dear Community UCC friends, neighbors and family, There are no words to express my gratitude for all of the love and support offered and showered upon our togetherness during the Installation celebration, but I want to say "thank you", nonetheless. For those who prepared the space, donned it with flowers and food, chairs and fresh scents and glistening floors & walls, for those who sent words of love and affirmation in your absence, those who have prayed for and welcomed me and my family into this community, for the kindness and extravagant welcome extended to our larger community, I give God thanks and praise and pray continually for the continued blessings of relationship.    It is even more clear to me that Spirit has woven us together in this work, which both inspires and challenges us as we look to the present-future of CUCC's role in our greater community, and in continuing to share sacred stories and space with one another.  Spirit is leading the ...

The story behind vandalization of a mosque

A few months ago our niece Sabrina talked at some length to Jo and me about an odd story she was working on in Arkansas. It was to be about the family of a blue collar 20-year old young man who was involved in vandalism of a mosque. The story she told was so intimate it sounded as if she was almost living with the young man's family. Today that article appeared in the NY Times. It's long. Very long. (On my large monitor it's 31 screenfuls, but that includes lots of photos.) But those of you who have met Sabrina on any of her visits with us will find this an interesting read. And it's also an interesting article from the standpoint of "how do you explain the inexplicable"? [ Email from Sabrina at 9:24 AM :  It is essentially a story of redemption (a white high school dropout helps vandalize a mosque, regrets it, writes a letter to them from jail, and is forgiven -- i distilled 7,000 words!!) and i'm hoping that is something of a tonic in this time of shouti...
