June 5 Topic: One way of thinking about the church is that it is a "school or studio of love" where we all learn and practice (and make mistakes) together as we seek to be disciples of our teacher Jesus.* Bookish soul that I am, I'm intrigued by the idea that a church is more like a dojo than a classroom, where wisdom is passed from experienced person to novice, and skill is learned by practice in community, not the solitary work of memorization, reading, and essay-writing.
Let's explore this way of thinking about the church. Where have you experienced the school or studio of love? Who have been your guides? Have you ever found yourself in the role of guide? What would you miss about church-as-teacher-of-beliefs? What feels comfortable about learning this way and what feels repellent?
*These questions are inspired by Brian McLaren's The Great Spiritual Migration, a hope- and idea-filled mix of imagination and storytelling about the church that Spirit is creating.
