Remembering a Christian justice advocate and friend

Judy and Leo (right) with the King's son at the reception for the Carolyn and Cy King Peace and Justice Award With sadness we announce the passing of CUCC friend Leo Klohr on May 24.  Leo was an advocate for peace and justice whose warm smile and intellectual curiosity were intertwined with deep faith.  Through his commitment to respectful dialog, educating for peace, and showing up at countless vigils and rallies, Leo helped a broad network of people find ways to take action for peace and justice.  Leo and his wife Judy Occhetti-Klohr were recipients of CUCC's 2015 Carolyn and Cy King Peace and Justice Award . Judy invites us to join her at a celebration of his life on Saturday, June 18, at 1PM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church .  Anyone who would like to send Judy a note can get their address from Jane Smith. - submitted by Jane Smith

What is needed is a safe environment where people have permission to ask the questions they've always wanted to ask but have been afraid to voice for fear of being thought a heretic. Diversity in our own dominion

Nicholas Kristof takes universities (and us?) to the woodshed in his latest column appearing in the NY Times. WE progressives believe in diversity, and we want women, blacks, Latinos, gays and Muslims at the table — er, so long as they aren’t conservatives. Universities are the bedrock of progressive values, but the one kind of diversity that universities disregard is ideological and religious. We’re fine with people who don’t look like us, as long as they think like us   ... Universities should be a hubbub of the full range of political perspectives from A to Z, not just from V to Z. So maybe we progressives could take a brief break from attacking the other side and more broadly incorporate values that we supposedly cherish — like diversity — in our own dominions.
