Welcome Home Pastor Steve
We welcome back our pastor, Reverend Steve Halsted this Sunday. Pastor Steve has been on sabbatical this past summer. We all look forward to hearing about your summer journey. You have been missed. Welcome home!
New Playhouse for Children’s Playground
The property ministry of CUCC needs your help to build a playhouse for the playground. We need interested folks of ALL AGES and ABILITIES to participate in the project: a few project managers as well as strong folks, good counters, ditch diggers, site levelers, people who are good with hammers and screwdrivers and saws, gluers, painters, carriers, etc. Volunteers to provide snacks and make sandwiches for workers would be WONDERFUL!! On Saturday, August 17, we will do site preparation and we will build the playhouse on August 24. We will do any last minute finish-up Sunday, August 25. If you are willing to pitch in, please contact Nancy Stoddard @ nstoddard@nc.rr.com or Joan McAllister @ joan_mcallister@att.net by 5:00pm, August 8, with information on the date you can work and the kinds of tasks you can do. We will be in touch!!
Youth to Cook & Serve Wright Center Meal, Sunday, August 18
If you haven't already, please let Śānti know ASAP (forsanti@aol.com) if you can help cook in church school and/or serve dinner at the Wright Center from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. This service project only happens once a year; don't miss your chance - it's meaningful work and you'll receive more than you give.
Welcoming Sunday
Thoughts of going back to school and memories of summer vacations remind us that summer is winding down. Some of us are making plans for that one last trip to the beach or the mountains. As fall approaches, CUCCers are preparing for Welcoming Sunday. What is Welcoming Sunday? It’s our church’s version of “Homecoming.” As we welcome everyone back from the summer, we participate in a variety of activities: playing games like horseshoes and croquet, signing petitions, and creating our own art work. We then celebrate the day with fried chicken! This year, Welcoming Sunday will be on September 8th. After a brief worship service, beginning at 10:30am, we’ll gather out in the main church yard where everyone is invited to enjoy the events and games. We’ll have a chance to check out and enroll in health care plans, make gay pride posters, record 30 second spots on what CUCC means to us, and commune with our fellow CUCCers. Besides fried chicken provided by Welcoming, Fellowship, and Growth, members are asked to bring a dish to share. Welcoming Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to invite family, friends, or neighbors to visit with us. We always have a great time on Welcoming Sunday. It just might be like having a taste of heaven.
Church Council
Church Council will meet Monday, August 19, at 7:00pm in the Bradow Room.
Stewardship Update
Status reports soon will be sent concerning your 2013 pledges to CUCC. Should you have questions about these reports, please contact Carol Clark at 919-876-1393 or cdebclark@msn.com.
Gardening Therapy
If you love being outdoors, love to get dirty and muddy while tending the garden and plants, and getting to know other CUCC folks, then “Gardening Therapy” is the right place for you. Join us from 9:00am – 11:00am on the first and third Tuesdays of the summer months to pull weeds, listen to the birds, prune plants and shrubs, and spend a few productive hours working on the CUCC grounds. A little gardening therapy is good for body and soul. We hope you’ll bring your work gloves and join us. Our next “therapy session” is Tuesday, August 20. For more information, contact Lena Gallitano.
Keeping Homeless Families Together
Please continue to help families be able to live together as they transition from homelessness to temporary housing to permanent housing by contributing household items. Take a post-it or two from the bright poster in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall, purchase the item(s) written on the post-it(s) and then return the item(s) to the basket under the poster.
Voter Registration Applications
Voter Registration forms are available in the CUCC office. Fill out and return it to the Board of Elections yourself or Jane Smith will return it for you. Deadline to register is September 13. Early voting begins September 19. Election Day is October 8.
NEWSLETTER DEADLINE
The deadline for the September Newsletter is Wednesday, August 21. Please send in your COPY READY article to the church office at cucc@nc.rr.com. Thanks!
