Steve’s Sabbatical
As Steve’s sabbatical comes to an end, we would like to thank Rev. Robert Parrish, Joy Alford, and Bill Lamb for their work in providing pastoral care and the excellent worship services that have occurred during Steve’s absence. Thank you Joy and Robert for your sermons and for all the hard work you did. Joy will be providing our sermon on Sunday, August 4, and Robert will preach on Sunday, August 11. Please plan to attend to thank them for their work this summer and to listen to their inspirational messages. Steve will return on August 15th. Until then, Robert will be in the church office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am – 1:00pm; Joy will be in the office on Wednesdays from 10:00am – 1:00pm; and Bill will be on call when needed. Please contact the church office at 919-787-6422 if you have any questions.
Food Bags for Urban Ministries
Linda Baker is now making the food bag deliveries to Urban Ministries. Please take the opportunity to thank her for her efforts in making this a continued success. Food lists are available at the Community Outreach bulletin board site and the list is printed below. Please bring your food bags to the church on the first Sunday of each Month and drop them off in the shopping cart in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. Due to the loss of extended unemployment benefits by 70,000 North Carolinians, there has been an increase in demand for emergency food. Let’s continue to do our part by reaching our goal of 30 bags each month. Last month, we donated 29 bags! Great job! Let’s keep our momentum going. Urban Ministries will be thrilled, as will many hungry clients.
Emergency food bags
The Food Pantry at Urban Ministries will provide one week’s worth of groceries for more than 8,000 families in need, including 9,000 children. Our contributions may seem small, but they are vital and greatly appreciated. Please double-bag your items, and if you sort your bag into two bags, please tie them together or label them so that we know they go together. A food bag costs about $20 to fill. If that’s a little steep for your budget, get together with a buddy and split the cost. Our goal is 30 bags – we can do it! Thank you for your faithfulness. Food bags are collected the first Sunday of every month. The items to include in a food bag are:
ONA Task Force
The ONA Task Force will meet today at Noon in the Hoffmann Room. All are welcome.
Moral Monday Discussion Group
The Moral Monday discussion group will NOT meet this Sunday August 5 at 9:15 but will meet next Sunday in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.
Youth Remain in Worship Service This Sunday
Youth will remain in the worship service this Sunday – First Sunday/Communion Sunday. Enjoy worship with your families.
Taizé Worship
As your week kicks into high gear, still your mind and wait in the presence of God. The silence is punctuated by reading of scripture and chanting meditative songs. No sermon, no offering, no announcements. Friends are welcome. Tuesday, August 6, 7:00pm, Vaughan Fellowship Hall.
Gardening Therapy
If you love being outdoors, love to get dirty and muddy while tending the garden and plants, and getting to know other CUCC folks, then “Gardening Therapy” is the right place for you. Join us from 9:00am – 11:00am on the first and third Tuesdays of the summer months to pull weeds, listen to the birds, prune plants and shrubs, and spend a few productive hours working on the CUCC grounds. A little gardening therapy is good for body and soul. We hope you’ll bring your work gloves and join us. Our next “therapy session” is Tuesday, August 6. For more information, contact Lena Gallitano.
Deacons Meeting
The Deacons will meet Thursday, August 8, 7:00pm, in the Pilgrim House.
Art Wall
On exhibit are three lovely paintings by Julia Mackintosh. Please make your way down the hall past the Library to the Art Wall (across from the Hoffman and Bradow rooms) to enjoy the art.

New Playhouse for Children’s Playground
The property ministry of CUCC needs your help to build a playhouse for the playground. We need interested folks of ALL AGES and ABILITIES to participate in the project: a few project managers as well as strong folks, good counters, ditch diggers, site levelers, people who are good with hammers and screwdrivers and saws, gluers, painters, carriers, etc. Volunteers to provide snacks and make sandwiches for workers would be WONDERFUL!! On Saturday, August 17, we will do site preparation and we will build the playhouse on August 24. We will do any last minute finish-up Sunday, August 25. If you are willing to pitch in, please contact Nancy Stoddard or Joan McAllister.
