Church-Wide Campfire and Sing-along this Saturday evening!
Come join the fall fun and be a part of a Church-Wide Campfire, Sing-along and Smores night!  Saturday, October 19, 7:00pm -9:00pm…On the church grounds!  Bring a camp chair and a copy of Rise Up Singing (if you have one, and don't worry if you don't).  We all had so much fun singing at our church-wide camping trip last spring; we didn't want to have to wait until next spring to gather around a fire again.  If you have questions, contact Śānti Matthews (919-961-8814).

Adult Forum - Sunday, October 20, 9:15am, VFH
What can CUCC do to assist in the outreach and enrollment effort? Adrienne Little and Ellen Beidler will lead a discussion with those interested in determining what we at CUCC might do to help out in this effort or support those in our congregation who want to work on this initiative.

Church Council Ministry Fair
Do you find yourself wondering about what’s going on at CUCC?  Would you like to be better connected and more involved?  Even if you have been with Community UCC for a while, would like to know more about some of the ministries and task forces that serve our church? The answers to your questions are at hand.  The Church Council, in conjunction with the Welcoming, Fellowship & Growth Ministry, is sponsoring a Ministry Fair.  At this event you will have the opportunity to talk with some of the leaders and members of our various Church organizations and gain insights about their activities.  The fair will also provide you with an opportunity to connect with your gifts and strengths.  The Ministry Fair will take place on Sunday, October 20th from 11:45am until 1:00pm in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.  Come and have a refreshing drink and a snack as you explore how the Creator might use you in the life of Community United Church of Christ.

Earth Sabbath Celebration, Tuesday, October 22, 7-8:30pm, VFH
This interfaith evening, sponsored by NCIPL and CUCC, combines fellowship and worship drawn from many faith traditions.  The evening’s focus is on renewing our spirits for creation care, advocacy, and education.  We meet in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall at CUCC.  Friends are welcome.

Newsletter Deadline
The deadline for newsletter submissions for the November 2013 Newsletter is WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23.  Please send in your copy ready submissions by the end of business that day.  Thank you.

Spirit, Mind and Body Group
The holiday season can be quite challenging in regards to physical and spiritual health for many of us. To prepare for the upcoming holiday season, Joy Alford will be facilitating a covenantal small group to support each other in uniting our spirit, mind and body by eating right, living well and loving God. This will be loosely based on the book Your Whole Life: The 3D Plan for Eating Right, Living Well, and Loving God, by Carol Showalter. The group will commit to reading themed devotionals with a 3D plan (diet, discipline, and discipleship) and will discuss these together each week. Copies of devotionals will be provided for those who do not wish to buy the book. This will be a six week challenge and will meet weekly on Wednesdays at 6:30pm from Oct 16th through Nov 20th in the Library at CUCC.  We will be empowered for self-control at Thanksgiving! If you are interested in this small group, please call the church office (919-787-6422) to RSVP.

Youth Lock-In - Friday, October 25, 7:00pm to Saturday, October 26, 9:00am, CUCC.  Contact Śānti Matthews (919-961-8814) for additional information.

Sisters in Spirit (SIS) - We'll meet in October on Tuesday, Oct. 29th. Curious about what some of women in the church may have accomplished in their lives. Let's gather at 6:30pm for potluck din-din and to learn about each other.  We'll make a "ta-dah" list of accomplishments (large or small) we've done and share with others. Sometimes it's good to take a break and pat ourselves on the back, rather than focusing only on what jobs are still left to do in our days. Come ready to applaud yourself and others. SIS is open to all women in the church.

PLM Families Together
PLM Families Together invites you to dine, dance and share in the moving journey from homelessness to independence.  This annual fundraiser takes place on Thursday, October 24, 6:30pm -9:30pm at Doubletree by Hilton Raleigh, Brownstone-University, 1707 Hillsborough Street.  There are no ticket sales but a reservation is required and an opportunity to make a financial gift will be extended.  Make reservations online at homewardjourney.plmft.org.  If you have questions, call 919-578-3212.

Keeping Homeless Families Together
Please continue to help families be able to live together as they transition from homelessness to temporary housing to permanent housing by contributing household items.  Take a post-it or two from the bright poster in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall, purchase the item(s) written on the post-it(s) and then return the item(s) to the basket under the poster.

Crop Walk
CUCC will participate in this year's CROP WALK...and we want YOU!  This year's CROP Walk will be held Sunday, October 27, 3:00pm, in downtown Raleigh.  This is a fun, family-friendly event that raises money for food organizations in our community.  We would love to have a big CUCC presence this year!  If you would like to join the team (and we hope that you will!) and/or sponsor a walker from our church, please email Laurel Powell (laurel.powell@gmail.com).  We hope to see you there!

New to CUCC? Newcomers' Supper, Monday, November 11
You are invited to join us for supper on Monday evening, November 11.  Around the table will be some people new to CUCC and some who have long been part of the congregation.  Bring your questions about the church and its congregation.  Arrive after 6:00pm for appetizers; we'll sit down to supper at 6:30.  RSVP to the church office (919-787-6422).  Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions or if we can arrange childcare for your young children.  We look forward to getting to know you.

Congregational Meeting – There will be a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, November 10, Noon, in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.

Talking with people on the other side
Do you ever find yourself talking with someone whose viewpoint is different from and hostile to yours? I do.  I want to be clear about what I believe about the issue while also being loving and building the relationship. Justice and love.  Love and justice.  I’m just not very good at this.  If this sounds like your struggle, too, let’s discuss Justin Lee’s book Torn:  Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs-Christians Debate .  What do his suggestions - geared to the Christian disagreement on welcoming LGBT people - say to us on all kinds of issues of faith in the public square?  Read the whole book before we meet November 10, 6:30-8pm, Bradow Room.  RSVP to Jane Smith or the Church Office (919-787-6422) or cucc@nc.rr.com as soon as possible.

Costume Poetry Slam with Cafe Style Coffee and Dessert
November 16, 7:00pm, in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. (This is our NovemberFest celebration):  Select a favorite poem or literary piece or song lyrics to read (or better yet write something of your own!). It should be short, lasting 1-2 minutes. Then wear something that relates to or enhances the reading. Coffee and dessert will be served cafe style by our youth wait staff. We'll give mock prizes and have some fun with this new idea!

Method Child Development Center
Method Child Development Center was started by Community United Church of Christ of Raleigh and four other churches in Raleigh.  It was the city's first integrated daycare.  It is a nonprofit daycare that offers financial assistance to families based on need and is an organization that could use some community support.  The center hasn't been painted since it moved from Pullen Baptist church to its current location at 900 Trailwood Drive, off Avent Ferry Road, more than seven years ago. We're having a painting work day at 9:00am, Nov. 9, and are looking for volunteers willing to come out and paint for 3 hours or so. If you can help out, please email Andrea Weigl at aweigl@earthlink.net so the parents’ group can make sure it has enough painting supplies for all the volunteers.

CUCC Appalachian Service Project
The CUCC Appalachian Service Project group is looking for three adventurous souls to join them this summer in eastern Tennessee, as they work to improve housing for low-income families.  Veterans of the program speak of their time in ASP as a meaningful spiritual experience. The group will leave Sunday, June 15th and return Saturday, June 21st.  Any one aged 14 and up is welcome to join. Whether you are a member of CUCC or a friend of a member; whether you have a vast home improvement skill set or don't know your way around a hammer, talk to us if you're interested!  And we mean youth OR adults are welcome on this team!  See Paul or Judy Kiel (919-845-7689), Kim Bowen (919-662-9974), or Julie Robertson (919-788-8824). Thanks!"
