Help Community Outreach Fill the Packs for PLM Families Together
During the month of August, the Community Outreach Ministry will be collecting school supplies for children supported through PLM Families Together. Starting August 3, backpacks will be placed in the Narthex and the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. Please use the school supply list below to help fill the backpacks! Donations will be taken to PLM Families on August 24, 2014. Items to include in the backpacks are:
College Ruled Paper Graphing Paper Notebooks
3 ring binders Protractors Compasses
Pencils Highlighters Pens
Erasers Pens Glue sticks
Crayons
Upcoming August Youth Activities
TOMORROW! Saturday, August 23: Love Our Animals! (Please come whether you have a dog or not!) Bring your dog/s, if you have one and want to, (or bring a photo of a pet or animal you especially like), to the entrance of Lake Johnson (4601 Avent Ferry Road, Raleigh 27606). We'll meet at 10:30am and all go for a nice long walk around the unpaved side of the lake and play with and appreciate our four legged friends. RSVP to Śānti Matthews by Friday, August 22.
Also, please consider bringing donations for Saving Grace (a local animal shelter).
Saving Grace is always in need of the following:
Monetary donations - medical expenses are by far their greatest expense
Gas cards (they drive many miles each week to rescue dogs and take dogs to vets)
High quality dog food (the shelter dogs consume 1,500 lbs. of dog food a month)
Large, heavy duty trash bags
Stamps
Copy paper (letter size)
Paper towels
Dog crates (both plastic and wire)
High Efficiency ("HE") type liquid laundry detergent
Used towels and blankets
Sunday, August 24: Make cards and/or a children’s book for the Wake Med Children’s Hospital or if our house work was canceled due to rain, we'll work on the house at 802 Dixie Trail.
Sunday, August 31: No Church School - Labor Day Weekend (the next week, September 7, is a first Sunday of the month, but we will all participate in Welcoming Sunday worship, fun, and potluck lunch!)
Gardening Therapy at CUCC
We hope you can join us for a little gardening therapy! Bring your favorite gardening gloves and tools. Our therapy includes weeding, as well as picking up pine cones and sticks. The best part is we make the church grounds lovely while sharing time with our CUCC friends. Our next therapy session is Tuesday, August 26th from 9:00am – Noon.

This interfaith evening, sponsored by NCIPL and CUCC, combines fellowship and worship drawn from many faith traditions. The evening’s focus is on renewing our spirits for creation care, advocacy, and education. Friends are welcome. Please join us Tuesday, August 26th, 7:00pm, in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.

Every Tuesday, from 12:30pm to 1:00pm, Duane Beck from the Mennonite Church meets with some of us. Go in the front door off of Jones Street. Turn left and meet at a table in the garden area. Scriptures will be provided if requested.

Welcoming Sunday is our Homecoming. Join us as we welcome everyone back from the summer with a variety of activities: games, crafts, music, social justice activities - and food! We will meet in the sanctuary at 10:30am and then gather in the main church yard where the festivities begin. Please bring a pot luck dish to share. Invite family, friends and neighbors to visit with us. All are welcome! See you on September 7!
Volunteers Needed for Wake Federation of the Blind
The Wake Federation of the Blind, the local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, will host the annual state convention of North Carolina from Thursday, September 18 through Sunday, September 21, 2014, at the Crabtree Holiday Inn. Robert Parrish, Vice President of the local chapter, is looking for volunteers to assist in helping blind and visually impaired individuals at this convention. We need volunteers to help people check into the hotel, guidance to their rooms and other areas, and help blind with serving their food in the hospitality room. The main days that assistance will be needed are Thursday, September 18, and Friday, September 19. If you wish to volunteer, please call Robert at 919-616-1606 or email at rcp7@bellsouth.net. Some orientation on how to guide blind and visually impaired individuals will be provided by Robert.
Calendar and Bubble Wrap Thanks
Thanks to one and all who donated calendars and bubble wrap. I made multiple tasks for science (birds, cats, dogs, flowers. marine life, wildlife), which was great. I also found a lot that worked for social studies: various states, the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina landmarks, a couple of historical events, etc. A few calendars were simple enough to use for vocabulary. I appreciate the generous contributions from CUCC. At this time, I've decided not to work with the Autistic class and the student who is fascinated with bubble wrap has been transferred to another school, so I'm out of the calendar and bubble wrap recycling business. Invitation to Caregiver Academy – Fall 2014
The Center for Volunteer Caregiving is excited to offer another session of the popular, Caregiver Academy for family members providing care for a loved one. The Caregiver Academy is designed to provide participants with tools and strategies to better handle their unique caregiving challenges.
The seven-week program combines the award winning curriculum of Powerful Tools for Caregivers (www.powerfultoolsforcaregivers.org) with practical training in caregiving tasks.
To help caregivers make the commitment to attend all 7 weekly sessions, care for a loved one during class time, transportation to the site and course materials can be arranged at no cost to the caregiver. *Please note that this program is not open to professionals or those seeking to work as paid caregivers.
The Caregiver Academy will meet every Thursday from September 11, 2014 –October 23, 2014, from 10:00am to Noon, at Southeastern Healthcare of NC, Inc., 3401 Carl Sandburg Ct, Raleigh, NC 27610.
The Caregiver Academy will enroll 14 participants. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Part-time Facilitator Position – Loaves and Fishes Ministry, Inc.
Loaves and Fishes Ministry, Inc. is seeking Part-time Facilitators responsible for planning and implementing academic, enrichment, and life skills activities for youth K-12. The mission of LAF is to provide long-term, relationship-based, out of school programming for youth in need of special attention to their individual challenges. The organization accomplishes this by using an experiential approach to holistic youth development that involves enrichment of the mind, body and spirit through academic, physical and social development. This is a comprehensive intervention out of school program for students on a modified calendar. Employment term will be September 8, 2014 - May 2014; Monday – Thursday, 1:00-6:30 with additional flex hours.
General Responsibilities:
Develop a positive, appropriate, mentoring relationship with students in grades K-2, or middle and high school students
Develop appropriate personal growth objectives for each student using LAF best practices
Help students meet objectives through set up of experiential learning opportunities and maintain stimulating learning environment
Maintain student’s files documenting life skills goals and growth, enrichment activities and LAF services rendered
Work closely with LAF partnership organizations to meet our monthly objectives
Plan and lead student goal-oriented enrichment outings during flex hours
Train, mentor, and support classroom volunteers
Develop and maintain rapport with children’s families, communicating emerging child issues to Family Director
Attend and participate in scheduled events such as Family Nights, Celebranza and Christmas
Transport students via LAF mini bus as needed
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
College degree in related field or two years of successful experience working with students in an appropriate school level (elementary, middle school and/or high school)
Demonstrated cultural competency to deliver services in a manner that is sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of the children and families served
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Creativity in developing experiential learning opportunities
Creative thinking and problem-solving skills
Ability to work as part of a team
Valid driver’s license
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a passion for serving youth, and a desire to develop life changing positive relationships with children and their families. Compensation will be between $13.00 and $14.50 per hour depending on skills and experience.
