Pastor's Letter

Multiple Choice Written by Vicki Kemper February 4, 2019 Elijah said to her, "For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth." -  1 Kings 17:14 The widow of Zarephath had a choice to make: Use what little she had to make one last supper for herself and her son or, instead, use it to feed the bossy prophet who promised his God would provide. We don't have to be in dire straits to recognize these basic life options: to withhold or to give, to cower in fear or to step out in trust, to settle for perceived scarcity or to recognize and embrace abundance. Play it safe or take a risk. Trust what we think we know or put our faith in the promise of an unimaginable love. Barely survive or bet on the fullness of life. Most of us face some version of these choices every day: To forgive or to grow embittered. To stew in our worries or be gr...

Let's Hear It For The Boys!

Let's Hear It For The Boys! Thanks to Justice in a Changing Climate, Carson Roach-Howell, and six dedicated guys from our CUCC youth group, the earth is a cleaner place.  Last Saturday, we encouraged and collected recycling from hundreds of students attending the Science Olympiad at Southeast Raleigh High School. We did a good and thorough job collecting and sorting bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard for recycling - all of which would have gone directly into the landfill without our help. And the earth says "Thanks Guys, Keep Up The Good Work"!

Join Rev. Dr. Nick Carter this Sunday, February 10, 12:15pm - Planned Giving

Planned Giving - Sunday, February. 3rd and Sunday, February 10th @ 12:15pm      Join Rev. Dr. Nick Carter for two sessions to learn about “Building a Healthy and Sustainable Financial Future.” All ages are welcome to attend. Dr. Carter is the former President of Andover Newton Theological School in Boston, MA, You will not want to miss this great opportunity to hear practical wisdom about planning for your future as well as our church’s future. Planned giving establishes a way for a donor to provide for family members while remembering the church as well.  It often enables the donor to provide more for his or her heirs an to make a larger gift than thought possible.  It often reduces taxes as well.  Planned Giving usually involves financial or estate planning, but it is not reserved for the wealthy.  It is a means by which anyone concerned with the wise use of his or her personal resources makes a considered choice ab...

Second Saturday Soup Circles Sign-up Time!

2nd Saturday Soup Circles   Time to circle up for the next 6-month rotation of CUCC's informal dinner group! Sign up by Valentine’s Day and our new circles will be posted Sunday, Feb 17. Each circle will have about 10 adults. The recipe for successful Soup Circles is simply to give it a try! Great for new congregants as well as long-time friends. This rotation runs from March thru September.  Here’s how it works: Rotate within your circle each month meeting at someone’s home on the 2nd Sat of the month for dinner. Soup or some such make-ahead anchor part of the meal should be provided by the host with perhaps a co-host from the group. Everyone else bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert. (Children’s participation and provision of drinks are at the discretion of the individual circle participants.) Remember that your group can decide to alter any part of the plans. It is not necessary that you meet each month, but to find 4 or 5 Saturdays that work for the greatest...

Life & Faith topic and location for Feb. 12

Looking for an informal group of people who don't have all the answers but enjoy sharing the questions?  Drop in on Life & Faith, CUCC's monthly, "whoever shows up" gathering at local pubs and breweries.  Look for the red Life & Faith comma at our table. February 12 Life & Faith meets at Wilson’s Eatery , the restaurant in a free-standing building which shares the parking lot with (and beers from) Lynnwood Brewing Concern. (Address:  1053 East Whitaker Mill Road).  As usual, arrive at 6:30PM to order your drinks and/or meal at the counter; conversation begins at 7:00.  There is a large parking lot, plenty of seating at Wilson's and, when I checked it out two weeks ago, we should be able to hear one another talk. For our 2019 theme, I had requested that people send me verses, stories or passages from scripture that are speaking to your life right now - perhaps getting under your skin or inspiring you or puzzling you. Our verse of scripture this ...

Remembering George Taylor

Adrienne Little, who represents our Social Justice ministry with Congregations for Social Justice, shares this opportunity to remember a Wake County resident who was lynched.  Check with Adrienne (look her up in Breeze) if you need more information. Monday, February 11 at 7:00 PM 1116 N Blount St I’m writing to you about the community remembrance project of Wake County, working to bring the memorial for George Taylor, Wake County’s one documented lynching victim, back from the Equal Justice Initiative Museum and Memorial in Birmingham. This project began with students at middle schools in Wake County (Knightdale and Raleigh) undergoing a history project to document the story of George Taylor. Those students are now asking grownups to step in and assist them with the logistics. I recently co-led a study of James Cone’s The Cross and the Lynching Tree, and that led to my interest in making sure George Taylor is properly honored in Wake. Co-Leaders: Chalice Overy, AME Pastor and...
