Who’s going to the Durham Bulls game on Friday, June 14? Are you?
Sign up by calling the church office (919-787-6422) by the end of the day (Friday) and leaving a message. Put your check in the offering plate with “Durham Bulls” in the memo line or send it to the church office. Don’t miss out on the fun. Carpooling is available. Come join us as we watch the Bulls “play ball!”
Dr. Hans Christian Linnartz to Preach this Sunday
We welcome Dr. Hans Christian Linnartz to the pulpit this Sunday, May 26, at 10:30 worship. Dr. Linnartz is one of our guest preachers while Pastor Steve Halsted is on sabbatical this summer. Dr. Linnartz teaches Immigration Law. He also directs the Summer Institute on Law, Language and Culture. He is a certified specialist in Immigration Law, practicing as a consultant with emphasis on immigration consequences of criminal cases. He holds degrees from the University of Virginia (B.A.), Duke Law School (J.D.), and Columbia Biblical Seminary (M.Div.). He was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1980 and is a member of various federal court bars. In addition to his law career, he has, at times, been a reporter for the Associated Press, a pastor, a professor of Old Testament in Indonesia, and a singer with Triangle Opera, the Durham Savoyards, the Choral Society of Durham and North Carolina Master Chorale. He brews his own beer and can also ride a unicycle, but not simultaneously.
Forum
We have just finished a busy year of CUCC Adult Forum on May 26. Forum will be on hiatus for the months of June, July, and August. If a speaker of interest is in town or something pressing comes up, special meetings at the usual Forum time (Sunday morning at 9:15am) may be organized. We will meet on May 26 and/or June 2 at Noon in the Bradow Room to map out the schedule for Forum for the Fall of 2013. All are welcome. If you are not able to attend, but have topics or speakers you would like to schedule, submit them in writing to Edith Sylla at esylla@bellsouth.net.
SIS (Sisters in Spirit)
How diverse were the “monsters” to creativity we developed at SIS meeting in April! A bird with its mouth taped shut; a drawing featuring “666” on a heart; and a colorful three dimensional drawing with actual hills on it to represent the ups and downs of life were among the varied offerings. Women of the church are invited to SIS to participate in a discussion of our favorite books we’ve read, led by Kathy Widenhouse, on Tuesday, May 28th, at our new time: 6:30pm for potluck and sharing in the Hoffmann Room. You just may find some inspiration for good summer reading!
Economic Justice Task Force
The Economic Justice Task Force will meet Wednesday, May 29, 1:00pm in the Bradow Room. Everyone is welcome to join us.
Tea Party and Doll Show
There will be a TEA PARTY and DOLL SHOW on Saturday, June 1st, in the Hoffmann Room from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. This was offered at the auction by Geraldine Bryan and Peg Hulslander. There is still room for others to join in. Girls and their mothers and grandmothers and friends are all invited to come and bring a doll or two. Please call 919-787-6422 or Peg at 919-833-7203 to let us know you can come. Hats and gloves are optional.
CHURCH WORKDAY
There will be an outside church workday June 1 starting at 9:30am and ending at Noon. Bring gloves, yard working tools (especially rakes), and window washing supplies. Come out and have fun helping beautify CUCC's grounds.
Moral Mondays
On Sunday, June 2, 9:15am, in the Vaughan Wing, The Social Justice Ministry will be holding a meeting to discuss participation in future Moral Mondays. By one count, eleven CUCC members participated in “Moral Monday” this past week, supporting those who were engaging in civil disobedience and facing arrest by entering the Legislative building to protest the injustices of current legislative activity. Standing across the street in support is something that families, including young people, may consider. On future Mondays, some adults in the congregation may choose to take the next step and risk arrest, but wonder if it is the right thing for them to do. The next Moral Monday will be June 3 (the Legislature will not be in session on Memorial Day). If you are considering taking part and want to know more about this, please come to the meeting to exchange ideas and information and plan ways we can support each other in this effort. There is a possibility that people who have been arrested in past weeks will be there to describe what they experienced. Meanwhile, if you might be willing to offer overnight accommodations to Moral Monday activists coming from High Country UCC in Boone for the Moral Monday on June 3, please contact Jane Smith at smithjeg@mindspring.com as soon as possible so she can help make connections. Any other questions, please contact Edith Sylla or any member of the Social Justice Ministry.
ONA Task Force
We will have a meeting of the ONA Task Force on Sunday, June 2, Noon, in the Hoffmann Room. Please plan to attend as we need to make plans for September forums, the worship service that ONA is doing in September, and PRIDE! We will also brainstorm ideas about the possibility of sponsoring a BSA troop at the church. All are welcome to attend.
Church School This Sunday and Through the Summer
This Sunday, May 26, the Youth will all be together for Church School. We will prepare thank you gifts for teachers and youth volunteers. Next Sunday, June 2, there will be no church school, as it is the first Sunday of the month. BUT WE ARE HAVING CHURCH SCHOOL THROUGH THE SUMMER! There has been some confusion about this, but we always meet through the summer months for church school. We also have several summer service projects and a pool party to look forward to. Be sure to read your newsletter and weekly emails. This summer we will study world religions. If you have special knowledge or interest in helping with this, please let Śānti Matthews know ASAP.
Graduates in the House?
We’re recognizing graduates during the 10:30 Worship service on June 9. Please contact the church office ASAP at 919-787-6422 with information on those graduating from high school or college. Please include graduate’s full name, school of graduation, degree, and future plans.
Summer Choir - Less Rehearsal, Lots of Joy
If you aren't able to attend weeknight choir practices, the summer is the perfect time to sing with the choir at CUCC. The choir sings first and third Sundays, gathering to practice at 9:30am immediately after Taizé in the sanctuary. No weeknight rehearsals, no choir robes! You can sing as many weeks as you like. Youth are welcome; friends are welcome. If you have any questions, talk to Anne Moorman-Smith or any member of the choir.
PLM Families - Keeping Homeless Families Together
The response we got from our request for items needed when new families move into an apartment was so great that we have decided to continue it. There is a basket in the fellowship hall under the windows for you to put items into. Items needed are:
laundry soap dish soap
toilet paper paper towels
trash bags spray cleaner
toothpaste toothbrushes
bar soap moisturizing shampoo
hand lotion deodorant
dish towels bath towels
wash clothes
Hand bulbs/batteries to the Smiths
Jane and Gary Smith are still willing to take your florescent light bulbs (tube or compact) and batteries to the hazardous waste drop off. Please, please, please, hand them directly to Jane or Gary. Do NOT leave them on the shelf in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. No broken bulbs or leaky batteries, please. We want to keep our church and our children safe.
Pastor Steve’s Sabbatical
Reverend Steve will be on Sabbatical from May 15 through August 15, 2013. While he is away, Rev. Robert Parrish, Joy Alford, and Bill Lamb will be providing pastoral care and general church business. Robert will be in the church office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am – 1:00pm. Joy will be in the office on Wednesdays from 10:00am – 1:00pm. Bill will be on call when needed. Please contact the church office at 919-787-6422 if you have any questions.
Solar Panels for CUCC?
Members of JCC and the Property Ministry have been discussing solar energy generation. We have a preliminary estimate that a combination of the CUCC Fellowship and Education wing roofs could be used to generate about 20,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year to sell to Duke Energy Progress. We are considering funding the system through an “LLC” in which CUCC members and others will have the opportunity to invest for several years to purchase the system, recoup their investment through tax credits and energy sales, and then donate the system to the church. We are looking for a date to hold an open discussion meeting this summer and would like to know of your interest in attending. Please contact Skip Stoddard (919-571-9199), skip.stoddard@gmail.com; Ron Howell (919-460-8678), ron_howell@bellsouth.net; or Gary Smith (919-787-6539), smithgk@mindspring.com, if you are interested. We will keep you informed as we schedule the meeting.
