May schedule for Sunday morning Adult Forum

Sunday, May 5: Sacred Food Scapes - Led by Carl Sigel, Chair, Steering Committee, Interfaith Power & Light. Continuation of Forum Series on Justice in a Changing Climate: Climate Change – Some Things We Can Do.

Sunday, May 12:  Rosenwald Schools - These schools were an effort in the 1920s and ‘30s to replace schools for black children which were dilapidated, run-down, supplied with inadequate worn out desks and hand-me-down books from the white schools. Between 1920 and 1936, over 817 new schools were built in North Carolina thanks to a fund established by Julius Rosenwald, President of Sears and Roebuck. There was a Rosenwald school within three miles of CUCC. Gary Moore, professor of Agricultural Extension Education at NCSU, will describe the requirements and stipulations for receiving funding to build the schools, discuss the unique school design, and look at the curriculum that was taught in these schools. What might we learn from this history with relevance today? Chair: Peg Hulslander, who heard Gary Moore lecture at Chautauqua.

Sunday, May 19: “The United States of ALEC,” a video by Bill Moyers, in relation to the current NC legislative session.  ALEC (The American Legislative Exchange Council) prepares model legislation for introduction by state legislators on such topics as voter ID requirements, charter schools, greenhouse gases, fracking, loans at any agreed upon interest, and many other topics on which related bills have been introduced in the current NC legislative session. Several CUCC members have seen this video and recommend it to your attention. You might find the ALEC website www.alec.org of interest. Panel discussion.

Sunday, May 26: Toward inclusion of sustainable living in curricula of NC community colleges. Presentation by Butch Grove, Dean of Sustainability at Wake Technical Community College, who has been leading a statewide task force researching and recommending ways in which community college curricula could be adapted across disciplines to incorporate sustainable development. Chair: Mac Hulslander.
