Sermon + and photos (August 18 worship reflection)

The worship bulletin cover  Zentangle art created at camp  by Maya Cobeland.  August 18 worship was BYC-style led by our youth. It examined Exodus, the focus of our summer youth camp this year. As we explore these stories, we recognize that we all carry the baggage of our plagues endured, our strength tested, our heartbreaks suffered. And sometimes, after a time, we break through our own egos and others’ attempts at control. We arrive at our promised land, our freedom and we look around with fresh eyes. We understand anew what’s being asked of us. New work begins. Photos from worship Can you name your Pharaoh? Name what your oppressor has been? What attitude has gripped your mind? What grief has owned your heart? What can you name as your oppressor with the intention of letting it go? The worship bulletin cover was Zentangle art created at camp by Maya Cobeland.

Tai Chi—New Day and Time

Tai Chi—New Day and Time Wednesday Mornings, 9:00am, in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. After warming up with stretching exercises, the group moves through ten Tai Chi movements which have been modified for people with movement limitations.  In a standing position, we do the movement leading with the left foot, ground our energy, then repeat with the right foot, and finish by grounding our energy and meditating.  Movements are performed slowly to music.  No experience is required.

Wright Center Meal

Wright Center Meal Like to cook and/or serve people? Community Outreach and  The Helen Wright Center could use your help. Cook part of the meal (main dish, veg, or dessert) serving 40. Or serve the meal (6:30-8PM). A good family (or pair of families) service project.  The Wright Center is a ministry of Urban Ministries of which CUCC was a co-founder. This small, intimate shelter is a great place for families to volunteer and for children to learn that helping other people is fun. Many CUCC children have grown up cooking and serving a meal  annually. The Helen Wright Center serves women who are homeless. It is located in downtown Raleigh.  The Helen Wright Center Program goes beyond providing a safe place to sleep, offering professional assistance in attaining goals of health care, education, employment, and stable housing. Contact Dawn Koonce or Charles Coble to learn more or volunteer.         ...

New at CUCC: Sermon + is an occasional series

How will you know if there is a question this week? Look for the   little blue square. Do you wish there were a way to engage with the sermon during the week?  Now there is. CUCC is launching an occasional series called Sermon + .  Some weeks our preachers will pose a follow-up question for your consideration.  You can join in community conversation via our Facebook page, Community United Church of Christ .  Or you can ponder on your own. Look for the sermon text and the question mid-week on the sermons page of our website , on Facebook , or @RaleighCUCC on Twitter.

Fall Soup Circles forming - sign up

Put your name in if you’d like to be grouped with a circle of 10 - 12ish folks who will meet on the 2nd Saturday of each month at someone’s home for dinner. The fall soup circle season runs from September to February. Your grouping is together for 6 months with the goal of doing your best to get together. Details are worked out by each circle, but the template arrangement is for the host to make soup (or some other make-ahead main dish of the meal) and for guests to bring sides or desserts. Don’t worry if you don’t have a home big enough for a dozen people; pair up with someone who does have space, or host at CUCC. Final day to sign up is Monday, August 26.  Circles will be announced September 1. Interested?  Contact Susan Atkinson of our Welcoming and Fellowship ministry. cuccfellowship@gmail.com
