1 - Week of Caring: Book Truck from Alison Hicks
I am reaching out to you as we have a large volunteer opportunity and would love to involve the greater community in our efforts to support the literacy of our most vulnerable populations. On Monday, April 24 we have a tractor trailer of 43,000+ books coming to the area and are in need of volunteers to assist with unpacking and sorting books for providers. Knowing the large networks of your groups, we’d truly appreciate it if you would share this information, particularly the link below. Anyone aged 18 or older and wants to lend a hand is welcome to join! It’s at the Eaton Warehouse on Capital Blvd in Raleigh and goes from April 24-April 28 from 9a-5p. Why is this important? Children living in low-income homes have on average 0-2 books in their household compared to middle to upper income families who have 100-150! A jaw-dropping statistics , but that’s why this program is so critical: without books how can we expect any young child to learn the fundamentals of reading, much less learn to read and then read to learn! 100% of the books from next week’s event will go into the hands of children living in low-income households across Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Orange, and Wake Counties to improve access to books and the love of reading. Help us support the foundations of education in our most vulnerable populations!

3 - Carolina Resistance Training Summit: Durham, NC from Judye Jacobs
Registration is now open for the first ever Carolina Resistance Summit Training, that will be taking place Saturday May 6th from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM at Rogers-Herr Middle School (911 W Cornwallis Rd) in Durham.
This day-long training will equip attendees, both new & seasoned with the tools to organize & continue fighting back against regressive legislation & policies. This training summit will focus on the overall NC political context.
Training blocks will focus on messaging strategies (including: narrative storytelling, social media, and earned media); organizing tactics, and our "mobilizing to win" efforts-including field tactics such as door knocking, phone banking, etc.
Whether you are new to the work or just looking to hone your organizing skills, this training will provide you with the tools and skills you need to fight back against regressive legislation and policies. Together we will build a forward thinking state that works for all North Carolinians.
