Moral Monday Ad Hoc Group Meets this Sunday, May 25
The Ad Hoc Moral Monday Group will meet at 9:30am, Sunday, May 25, VFH.  The group will be discussing Lobby Day, May 27, sponsored by the Moral Monday Movement.  Jane Smith sent in the following announcement:  “I'll deliver your letter to the NC General Assembly. - On Tuesday, May 27, Moral Monday is sponsoring a lobby day. I know many of you have daytime commitments that prevent your coming yourself, but you have important things to say to your legislators. I'd be happy to hand deliver your letter or email. Bring your letter to church this Sunday, May 25. OR Send your email to me by Sunday night, May 25, at smithjeg@mindspring.com. With a sticky note or in a separate email, tell me to whom I should deliver your letter (senator and/or representative OR, if you know it, the name of the person).

·       There may be time on Sunday morning to draft a letter to give to Jane.  Some suggestions for your letter are:

·       Begin with something like "I have asked Jane Smith to hand deliver my letter to you; I can't be there myself because I (am at work, am caring for my children/parent, etc.)."
·       Make a personal connection. Tell a (brief) story about how someone you know (especially someone close to you) is being helped or hurt by past or proposed legislation.
·       Conclude with a sentence that states what you want the legislator to do. ("Please support...” or “Please repeal...")
·       Thank the legislator and ask for a response.
·       Sign with your name, street address (so the legislator knows you are in the district), and phone # or email address
- Submitted by the Ad Hoc Moral Monday Group

Forum on Break for the Summer
Forum is on hiatus for June, July, and August.  Forum will resume in September.

Gardening Therapy at CUCC begins Tuesday, May 27
We hope you can give us a hand over the summer for a little gardening therapy!  Bring your favorite gardening gloves and tools.  Our therapy includes weeding, as well as picking up pine cones and sticks.  The best part is we make the church grounds lovely while sharing time with our CUCC friends. Please join us on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each summer month: May 27, June 10 & 24, July 8 & 22 – 9:00am – Noon.

Earth Sabbath Celebration – Tuesday, May 27, 7:00pm
This interfaith evening, sponsored by NCIPL and CUCC, combines fellowship and worship drawn from many faith traditions.  The evening’s focus is on renewing our spirits for creation care, advocacy, and education.  Friends are welcome. Please join us Tuesday, May 27th, 7:00pm, in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.

Pray at the Legislature – Tuesdays, 12:30pm-1:00pm
On Tuesdays from 12:30pm to 1:00pm, join Duane Beck from the Mennonite Church
for Prayers at the Legislature.  Go in the front door off of Jones Street. Turn left
and meet at a table in the garden area. Scriptures will be provided.  (SJM)

Durham Bulls Baseball
It’s time once again for Durham Bulls Baseball.  This year’s outing will take place on Friday, June 6.  Come cheer on the Bulls in the newly renovated Durham Bulls Athletic Park as they take on the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Please sign up for the game through the church office, 919-787-6422, by Wednesday May 28 as tickets are going fast. Tickets for the game are $14.99 per person and include a $5.00 coupon toward concessions. If you wish to attend the game, please write a check for the appropriate amount and place it in the offering plate or send it to the church office.  Be sure to write Durham Bulls in the memo pad so that the church can properly be reimbursed.  For those interested in carpooling, we’ll meet at the church on Friday, June 6 (time to be determined) and carpool to Durham Bulls Athletic Park in time for the 7:00pm start. I look forward to seeing you on Friday, June 6 as we cheer on the 2013 International League champions Durham Bulls.  (Submitted by Robert Parrish)

Loaves and Fishes Breakfast
You are invited to attend the “2014 Lifting Minds and Hearts” breakfast Thursday, May 29, 7:30-9:00 am. Please e-mail Betty Anne Ford as soon as possible at baford23@gmail.com to let her know if you are coming.  The event will be in Memorial Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 112 S. Hargett St.  Someone else has already paid for your meal and this is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Loaves and Fishes. The program will feature presentations by three key LAF staff members and talks by three graduating seniors. You will also see other students in action on the stage! Let us know that you can attend and we will promptly e-mail you instructions for parking. (Submitted by Betty Anne Ford)

Church Women of the Southern Conference 2014 Women’s Summer Conference
Women of the Southern Conference are invited to the 2014 Women’s Summer Conference, June 19-21, at Black Lake Retreat Center, Asheboro, North Carolina.  The theme of the conference this year is Treasure in Clay Vessels.  For additional information and to register for the conference, go to www.soc-ucc.org.  There are also registration forms on the table at the back of the Sanctuary.  This year, the resource leaders are Reverend Cally Rogers-Witte and Dorothy Lester.  Cally specifically asked that women of CUCC attend as she would love to see familiar faces at the conference.  The deadline says May 22, but Nora Norred, Chairperson, assured us that there was still plenty of time to register.  Contact Nora Norred at 336-859-0770 if you have any questions.

“Community Church Non Profit Housing Corporation”
Anyone who would like to serve on the Board of Directors of the new nonprofit organization, please contact Carol Kepler (919-787-7420), Joan McAllister (919-851-9674), or the church office (919-787-6422). We would appreciate your participation.  We plan to have an organizational meeting the week of June 9.

Sam and Jack Alcorn Support Affordable Housing with Bike & Build
For five summers, Sam and Jack Alcorn worked on the Appalachian Service Project with CUCC to repair homes.  This year they are raising money to participate in Bike & Build.  The group organizes cross-country bicycle trips which benefit affordable housing groups such as Habitat for Humanity.  For more information about the effort, pedal to http://bikeandbuild.org.
Jack will ride from Providence to Seattle (3900 miles).  To donate to Jack, visit http://bikeandbuild.org/rider/7310.  Sam will be leading a group of 30 riders from Nags Head to San Diego (3600 miles).  To donate to Sam, visit http://bikeandbuild.org/rider/7084. Each rider raises $4500 for affordable housing to participate. Each trip includes about 60 days of biking, usually 60 to 90 miles per day, and 10 days of building affordable housing.  Habitat for Humanity of Orange County will receive funds from Bike and Build's fundraising this year.  Thank you for your support!

Sam and Jack would welcome letters and packages from friends, family, and supporters. Bike & Build groups will receive mail approximately once a week while on the road. Mail will be delivered through USPS General Delivery. Please be sure to send mail in ample time to arrive prior to the pick-up date and only through the United States Postal Service (The Post Office will not accept mail from any other carrier). Congregations for Social Justice Petition
Congregations for Social Justice invite you to join us in asking for a stronger Raleigh Housing Authority Board:

PETITION

TO:     Raleigh Mayor, Nancy McFarlane, and the City Council

RE:    Make the Raleigh Housing Authority Board Larger and More Diverse

At present, the Raleigh Housing Authority (RHA) Board has no members from areas of the City with concentrations of properties controlled by the RHA, and Board composition does not reflect the racial and socio-economic profile of Raleigh.  The voices of those most affected by the decisions of the RHA Board are missing.

1. We ask that the number of Raleigh Housing Authority Board seats be increased from its current seven members to the historic nine members.

2. We further ask that the Mayor, in making appointments to the RHA Board, fill positions so that the Board more closely reflects the racial and socio-economic profile of Raleigh, especially those served by RHA.
