Providing Food and More – (Food Bags Due this Sunday)
"Food insecurity is one of the biggest concerns for those facing poverty, especially during the summer months when children are home from school."  (Urban Ministries)

How many times do you come back from the grocery store with paper towels, soap, or toothpaste in your shopping bags? While these items aren't food, most of us consider them necessary. Urban Ministries is asking us to fill food bags, which we have been doing for years. And now, in addition, Interact, The Women's Center, and PLM Families Together are asking for non-food necessities.

Community Outreach Ministry is looking for some help from you. When you shop for Urban Ministries food bags, please consider picking up a "bonus" non-food item, too. COM is providing a box next to the food bag drop off area in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall for bonus items. You can also put bonus items in the laundry basket in the fellowship hall that is set up for their collection.  The “bonus” non-food items requested for PLM, Interact, and The Women’s Center are:

Toothpaste                      Toothbrush
Liquid hand soap             Bar of DOVE soap
Sponges                          Dishwashing liquid soap
Paper towels

Below is the list of items for the food bags. Thank you for supporting these great community resources.

                                                  Emergency food bags

The Food Pantry at Urban Ministries will provide one week’s worth of groceries for more than 8,000 families in need, including 9,000 children. Our contributions may seem small, but they are vital and greatly appreciated.  Please double-bag your items, and if you sort your bag into two bags, please tie them together or label them so that we know they go together.  A food bag costs about $20 to fill.  If that’s a little steep for your budget, get together with a buddy and split the cost.  Our goal is 30 bags – we can do it!  Thank you for your faithfulness.  Food bags are collected the first Sunday of every month.  Bring them to the church and drop them off in the shopping cart in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.  The items to include in a food bag are:

1 lb. grits                  1 lb. rice                          1 lb. dried beans
2 cans tomatoes       2 cans applesauce          2 cans navy, pinto or pork ‘n beans
1 jar peanut butter    2 macaroni & cheese      2 1-qt pkgs dry milk
1 can carrots

Durham Bulls Baseball
It’s time once again for Durham Bulls Baseball.  This year’s outing will take place on Friday, June 6.  Come cheer on the Bulls in the newly renovated Durham Bulls Athletic Park as they take on the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Please sign up for the game through the church office, 919-787-6422, by Sunday, June 1, as tickets are going fast. Tickets for the game are $14.99 per person and include a $5.00 coupon toward concessions. If you wish to attend the game, please write a check for the appropriate amount and place it in the offering plate or send it to the church office.  Be sure to write Durham Bulls in the memo pad so that the church can properly be reimbursed.  For those interested in carpooling, we’ll meet at the church on Friday, June 6 (time to be determined) and carpool to Durham Bulls Athletic Park in time for the 7:00pm start. I look forward to seeing you on Friday, June 6 as we cheer on the 2013 International League champions Durham Bulls.  (Submitted by Robert Parrish)

Tuesday Evening Taizé Worship – June 3, 2014
Our spiritual needs cannot be met by a noisy, fast-paced, materialistic society, but the thirst of our souls can be quenched with meditative prayer through which we connect with God.  We hold Taizé services each Sunday morning at 9:00am, but also on the first Tuesday evening of every month at 7:00pm. Taizé worship is marked by a spirit of contemplation, prayer and extended periods of silence. One aspect of Taizé worship is the repetitive singing of short and simple chants, which enable us to let go of the clutter of our minds and to listen and pray to God with our hearts.  If you…

…long for peace and quiet;
…want to pray for yourself or for others;
…love to feel the words of Scripture wash over you;
…yearn for a deeper connection with God,

then please join us this Tuesday evening at 7:00pm in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.

Pray at the Legislature – Tuesdays, 12:30pm-1:00pm
On Tuesdays from 12:30pm to 1:00pm, join Duane Beck from the Mennonite Church
for Prayers at the Legislature.  Go in the front door off of Jones Street. Turn left
and meet at a table in the garden area. Scriptures will be provided.  (SJM)

Youth Confirmation Next Sunday, June 8
Please be in prayer for our youth who are looking toward and preparing for Confirmation, and plan to join us in worship on June 8 for this special Sunday. After worship, youth and their families are invited to join us for our annual end of year lunch and milkshakes at Cookout!

Graduate Celebration – Sunday, June 15
We will celebrate our graduates this year in worship and during fellowship. If there are graduates in your household or family, please notify Steve Halsted, Śānti Matthews, or the church office so we can acknowledge them and celebrate their accomplishments.

Church Women of the Southern Conference 2014 Women’s Summer Conference
Women of the Southern Conference are invited to the 2014 Women’s Summer Conference, June 19-21, at Black Lake Retreat Center, Asheboro, North Carolina.  The theme of the conference this year is Treasure in Clay Vessels.  For additional information and to register for the conference, go to www.soc-ucc.org.  There are also registration forms on the table at the back of the Sanctuary.  This year, the resource leaders are Reverend Cally Rogers-Witte and Dorothy Lester.  Cally specifically asked that women of CUCC attend as she would love to see familiar faces at the conference.  The deadline says May 22, but Nora Norred, Chairperson, assured us that there was still plenty of time to register.  Contact Nora Norred at 336-859-0770 if you have any questions.

Caregiver Support Group
Are you a long term caregiver or know of someone who is and would like to participate in a support group?  Sue Rogge is interested in starting a support group for caregivers.  Sue is a licensed Clinical Social Worker and a previously ordained United Methodist minister.  She supports her 87-year-old widowed mother who has moderate dementia and who lives in an independent living retirement complex.  She has been an active member of caregivers support groups for over two years.  If you would like to participate in a new support group, please contact Sue Cottle at muey1c@gmail.com or 919-772-8288.

Gardening Therapy at CUCC
We hope you can give us a hand over the summer for a little gardening therapy!  Bring your favorite gardening gloves and tools.  Our therapy includes weeding, as well as picking up pine cones and sticks.  The best part is we make the church grounds lovely while sharing time with our CUCC friends. Please join us on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each summer month: June 10 & 24, July 8 & 22 – 9:00am – Noon.

Community Corrections and Re-entry Task Force Meeting

Congregations for Social Justice Petition
Congregations for Social Justice invite you to join us in asking for a stronger Raleigh Housing Authority Board:

PETITION

TO:     Raleigh Mayor, Nancy McFarlane, and the City Council

RE:    Make the Raleigh Housing Authority Board Larger and More Diverse

At present, the Raleigh Housing Authority (RHA) Board has no members from areas of the City with concentrations of properties controlled by the RHA, and Board composition does not reflect the racial and socio-economic profile of Raleigh.  The voices of those most affected by the decisions of the RHA Board are missing.

1. We ask that the number of Raleigh Housing Authority Board seats be increased from its current seven members to the historic nine members.

2. We further ask that the Mayor, in making appointments to the RHA Board, fill positions so that the Board more closely reflects the racial and socio-economic profile of Raleigh, especially those served by RHA.

Sam and Jack Alcorn Support Affordable Housing with Bike & Build

Bike & Build - Pedaling for Affordable Housing

For five summers, Sam and Jack Alcorn worked on the Appalachian Service Project with CUCC to repair homes.  This year they are raising money to participate in Bike & Build.  The group organizes cross-country bicycle trips which benefit affordable housing groups such as Habitat for Humanity.  For more information about the effort, pedal to http://bikeandbuild.org.

Jack will ride from Providence to Seattle (3900 miles).
To donate to Jack, visit http://bikeandbuild.org/rider/7310.

Sam will be leading a group of 30 riders from Nags Head to San Diego (3600 miles).
To donate to Sam, visit http://bikeandbuild.org/rider/7084.

To participate, each rider raises $4500 for affordable housing.

Each trip includes about 60 days of biking, usually 60 to 90 miles per day, and 10 days of building affordable housing.  Habitat for Humanity of Orange County will receive funds from Bike and Build's fundraising this year.  Thank you for your support!

Sam and Jack would welcome letters and packages from friends, family, and supporters. Bike & Build groups will receive mail approximately once a week while on the road. Mail will be delivered through USPS General Delivery. Please be sure to send mail in ample time to arrive prior to the pick-up date and only through the United States Postal Service (The Post Office will not accept mail from any other carrier).
