Bail Bond Reform - Do Justice Ministry

The Do Justice Ministry is working to change the unjust NC Bail Bond system by advocating for evidence based pre-trial release of low risk persons.  We invite you to consider ways to support this effort such as writing letters, visiting legislators, and advocate for system change. ·         At least 70% of jail inmates are not convicted.
·         It costs ~ $82/day to stay in jail.
·         The amount of cash money/bail (paid to bail agents) increased from 24% in 1990 to 49% in 2009.
·         Persons who cannot make bail are four times more likely to receive jail time.
·         The bail set for African Americans exceeds that set for whites by 35% and Latinos by 19%.
·         The political contributions made by Bail Industry in NC between 2002 and 2016 exceeded $350,000.
